Switch to the Library module.

Go to LR / Edit / Prefs / Performance and UNCHECK the User Graphics Acceleration

If it crashes when you try to do that, then edit the LR prefs file manually, setting useAutoBahn=false from true.

I have a perpetual license with the same issue, and this solution fixed it there, as well.
Thank you!

This seems to be a recent regression in Lightroom. I started getting these crashes now where it worked before, (still) running Windows 8.1 and the same graphics drivers that worked before.

Disabling GPU acceleration through the config file seems to "fix" it.

LR 6.0 is the first to use the GPU. And each version they try to make it more compatible but perhaps that makes things not work in a few cases that did work, before. It's also possible that something else is interfering with the GPU when LR is trying to use it.

If you're using an AMD GPU, the 15.8 beta release notes mentioned a fix for this crash, so if you feel lucky you could try the current 15.9.1.

That driver fixes a hang/freeze issue, not a crash.

Recently, after 2 years from your original post, I ́ve exchanged MSI nVidia GTX970  to Sapphire AMD RX580 LE. LR is constantly crashing, mostly when changing Library mode to Develop mode, but often alsa when using some filter for showing the pitures.
Disabling GPU helped, but  I ́m not happy about this "solution" :(

Did you try rolling back the driver version? https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/rollback-driver-amd-issue.html

The recent update notes for LR state that there's an issue with "only" AMD driver version 17.4.4, so you could try your luck on either side of that version (current is 17.5.2, and I've had good success with the March versions 17.3.1 and 17.3.3).
