Lightroom CC 7.1: performance slow with my keywords

Hi:

I stumble over a strange behaviour of my keyword-catalog when entering keywords. If I add a keyword to say three already added, that is I add the fourth one at the end, it takes a long time to find this new keyword in the existing list. However, if I add this keyword at the beginning of the entries, performance is smooth.

To illustrate: say we have a photo with

kw A, kw B, kw C

Now you add kw D as follows:

kw A, kw B, kw C, kw D   --> LR takes a long time to find kw D in the keyword list.

But if you add it

kwD, kw A, kw B, kw C    --> LR acts smoothly and with the usual speed.

Anyone has an idea what could be the cause of this and how to cope with it?

Working on iMacPro 64 GB, macOS 10.13
The KW-catalog has some 40'000+ keywords

Well, I'm going to out on a limb and say the keyword bits in the database may not be indexed, which seems silly to me.

I was going to reply that I recalled someone else reporting similar symptoms, but then I found your post from four months ago: https://forums.adobe.com/message/9856144#9856144  :->   In that post, you also mentioned that the keyword list was hierarchical and that collapsing the Keyword List  panel made no difference, and that the currently selected source was a folder.  Since you're on Mac, you're not getting struck by the LR Windows bug with more than 1500 keywords.

Since there are many people who use LR successfully with controlled vocabularies of 50K keywords or more, I'm a little skeptical the problem is related to database indexing.

Some more thoughts and questions:

1. Try resetting LR's preferences: https://www.lightroomqueen.com/articles-page/how-do-i-reset-lightrooms-preferences/. Unfortunately, that often fixes things when the LR user interface starts acting wonky.

2. It sounds like you're entering the keywords into the large grey box where all the current keywords are displayed:

Does the behavior still occur if you enter the keywords in the one line box below it?

3. Does the behavior still occur if you change Enter Keywords to Keywords & Containing Keywords or Will Export?

Hi John: thanks for your hints.

a) the behavior does not occur when the keywords are entered in the line below the box.
b) the bevior does not occur either with Keywords & Containing Keywords or Will Export, as you can only enter KW in the mentionned line.
c) did not yet try to reset the prefs, however, I exported the whole LR catalog into a new catalog, and with the new catalog the beavior is as expected, i.e. fast and smooth.

So c) seems to solve it, but for how long? ...

Well, at least you have two workarounds, exporting as a new catalog and entering keywords in the lower box.

Do you have an idea what the cause could be?

The fact that exporting as a new catalog gets rid of the problem suggests there was something bad happening in the old catalog database, obviously.  But I don't have any more ideas than that.
