Lightroom Classic: Catalog update. Feature request

As a Lightroom instructor, every time a new version of LR requires a catalog update, I get a deluge of questions from students asking what to do, and is it safe? To help walk people through it, I made a youtube video detailing the process to avoid future confusion re catalogs:

Lightroom Catalog Update: What to do?

Somehow these steps need to be integrated into the process in LR Classic... the dialog box should have the option to name your updated catalog, as well as store old catalogs in an appropriately named folder, and make the updated catalog the default one for LR.

These steps would greatly ease the anxiety people feel when upgrading their catalogs, and avoid confusion about which catalogs is the current one.

Any feedback from the forum community?

Thanks,

Rob

I agree so much about the naming, only last week I was helping someone whose catalogue was called Lightroom Catalog-2-2-2-2-2 (and renamed it Main Lightroom Catalog-Lr9).

that's exactly the situation I've seen so many times.... and when people get confused and open the wrong catalog... havoc ensues.
In my Lightroom workshops, I spend a good deal of time on LR catalog management... naming the Master catalog, where to keep the catalog, where to put the backups, etc.
These issues should be better managed within Lightroom itself.

Great ideas! I also have clients that get totally confused on this process....I'm not sure why the old catalog can't be renamed and the updated new version catalog can't keep the name that the user is already familiar with.

Agreed! I have to walk people through this all the time with the LR consulting I do. The catalog update process should be a wizard that walks people through the process, especially choosing their own name for the updated catalog.

Well, at least now you can direct them to the video, and I can walk them through it!
