Lightroom 6 crashes when I open it. It warns the "catalog was left in an inconsistent state. Lightroom must restore the catalog before proceeding. This may take several minutes"  But the App crashes at this point.

99% of the time when any program crashes it is caused by the hardware in your computer.
So the place to start is checking all the hardware in your computer.

First thing to do is disconnect anything that is connected, Phone, Pad External HD and test.

What OS are you using?

Move your LR catalog out of the folder it is in to some other, any other, folder and then try starting LR. It should create a New Blank Catalog, if it starts. If it doesn't start then Uninstall and reinstall to correct damaged LR program files.

But IMHO LR is not the cause of the problem as stated above.

Hi, I am using 10.13.3 (High Sierra). I hid the catalog files as you suggested and it tried to create a new catalog and crashed again.  I tried this again and instead had it open an old Lightroom 3 catalog, which it updated to Lightroom 6. This catalog update is till in progress (it is taking many minutes). I'll see if the program crashes after it updates the catalog.

It keeps crashing on start up. Like a split second after it starts to open.

I find no Crash Reports under your email address Greg. Do you get a dialog asking you to submit? Is the dialog Apple's or Adobe's?

Hi, The Dialog comes from Lightroom (Adobe) and it pops up for a brief second and then the program completely disappears, which is what I meant by crashing. I took a picture of the dialog box with my phone because it is up so briefly on the screen

Show us the screen shot.
Also High Sierra is up to 10.13.6. So it seems you are a few point releases behind. But that shouldn't have an effect that you are seeing.

BTW, I set up a new/blank user account on my iMac and Lightoom opens just fine on that account. So it is the broken catalog that is giving Lightroom a problem. The day before my problem occurred, I had opened Lightroom just to load a few new pictures from my iPhone. I closed Lightrrom normally after doing so, but the next time I opened the app, I got the above error. But instead of "fixing" the catalog, the Program dissappears.

Not really LR or the broken catalog. It is your present User Account.
If LR opens and creates a new catalog file without crashing, shutting down, on a new user account then it is not LR or any catalog. It is your present user account and or a problem with the hardware in your system.

Can you go to a recent backup and try it? Does it crash?

I double click on a backup lrcat file and LR opens and crashes. Is there another way to try to open LR with a backup file?

Do a search of your system for .lrcat or add a .zip to that to see how many and where the LR catalog file backups are stored. By default LR creates, or tried to create a backup of the LR catalog once a week.
Find the newest one, they are in Dated folders, IF it is a Zip file Un-Zip it (Expand it) and then Double click on it. That should open LR and load that catalog backup.
If you have the same problem you have a Problem with your Mac. Drive starting to fail, memory going bad, System overheating.

The picture you posted look to be giving your the same Inconsistent state warning as your original catalog. Like even though you Moved the original catalog the new one created by LR when opening and not finding the original catalog file the same thing is happening.

If you Delete that new catalog file, with LR Closed and rebooting your system, then Open LR it should then again make a New catalog file. Do you get the same error.
