Lightroom 5.7/DNG Converter: Camera Profiles

I am using LR 5.7 which supports my Canon 7D, however, it doesn't support newer cameras such as the Canon 80D.  So in order to process images from the 80D in LR 5.7, I convert to DNG using DNG Converter.

But I notice that when I convert images taken with the 7D to DNG with the converter it retains the built-in camera profiles (landscape, portrait, faithful, neutral, standard) , but when I convert 80D images none of the camera profiles are retained.

Is this normal and to be expected?

LR 5.7 doesn't know about any of the 80D profiles, itself, because it is too old.  It can only see the one default profile that the DNG Converter embedded in the DNG during conversion.  The DNG Converter you are using is new enough to know about all the 80D profiles.

So, what you are saying is that the profile information is programmed into LR, not contained in the Raw file - correct?

Yes, when Adobe supports a new camera it is because they have created all the profiles for that camera and perhaps done a little custom programming for that camera, and ship those profiles with the new version of LR.  Each camera has it's own set of profiles.

A DNG can contain ONE profile and the DNG Converter embeds the default profile, usually Adobe Standard or Adobe Color for the newer version series, to the DNGs it creates from the raw files.

Some cameras, for example my Samsung Galaxy phone, produce DNGs and those DNG raw files contain one profile, perhaps created by the camera manufacturer not Adobe.

LR apparently stores the camera profiles in the "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.7\Resources\CameraProfiles\Camera" folder.  DNG Converter doesn't know what version of LR you have, so wouldn't it include the camera profiles in the .dng?  So if I managed to come across a LR camera profile for the 80D and installed it in this folder, wouldn't LR read it on startup and recognize the camera profile in the .dng?

Lr only recognizes the profiles it was shipped with in the LR resources folder.

Try copying the 80D profiles (.dcp files) from under the Adobe Standard (1 profile) and Camera (6 profiles) subfolders of:
C:\ProgramData\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles

to the user profile area:
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles\

Also, are there any camera profile creation programs I could use to make my own camera profiles?
