I have problems opening Catalogs with long catalog names and if it does open the catalog will not backup to the original folder and if I change the backup location it still will not backup.I think this is a Lightroom 2015.8 bug .

Can you give an example of one of the filenames please? And also where is the catalog stored? And what happens when you have problems opening? And finally, which OS?

The only File Name with Problems is: North Shore_AV Summer_Fall_AV Fall 2016. the file is on a portable Hard Drive and both of my hard drives will not open if my catalogs open they will not auto backup. when the Catalog with problems is on my windows hard drive it opens and not backup. I also have macOS Sierra and I have none of these problems i have described to you

Is it possible that it is not the filename but the portable hard drive?
Windows and Mac's don't use the same filesystem so you have to take precautions:

  1. Make changes to the Windows system so you can write an drive formatted with Mac filesytem
  2. Make changes to the Mac system so you can write an drive formatted with Windows filesystem
  3. Format the drive with a file format that both OS can write
For 1 and 2 you need software
For 3 you can use the exFAT filesystem

How long are these catalog names and how 'deep' is the full pathname?
Is something changed latetly in these?
Is this on Windows or Mac?
Does Lightroom say anything when it don't want to back-up? (like catalog is bigger then 2 Gb)?

You do not say if you are using Macintosh or Windows, but there is a known bug that Lightroom CC2015.8 for Windows cannot backup a catalog with two-byte characters in its name. So it's not the length of the name, but things like è or ü in it.
