When you are in library Filter mode sorting photos by keyword, and you merge two (or more) photos with the same keywords, the program kicks you out of select/view by keyword mode and displays the whole catalog. It would be great if the program kept you in the Library Filter display by keyword mode. This is a problem and an Idea

Don't understand "merge two (or more) photos". Could you explain it another way please.

I am referring to when I use the Photo > Photo Merge > Panorama function.

If the Library Filter bar isn't showing, do the menu command View > Show Filter Bar. Then if the lock icon isn't locked, click it to lock it:

Now Photo Merge won't change the filter or source settings.

Maybe you should explain what is the problem then. I don’t think anyone is going to call you, especially not those people here who are volunteers and Lightroom users just like you, not Adobe employees.

Ok, you have selected to view files by a keyword. You choose two photographs to merge into a panorama with the identical keywords (all of them, including the one you have selected to view the photos by.  After the merge the keyword that you had chosen to view the files by is no longer selected.  So you have to go back and re-select the keyword to view photos.  After the merge the filter settings are back to selected all photos or undefined.

Normally, this behavior occurs when you've got the filter unlocked; locking the filter stops the current filter and source from getting reset.  See this screen recording of doing Photo Merge with and without the filter lock on:

If locking the filter lock doesn't help, you might try resetting LR's preferences:

That magic spell often fixes things when LR's user interface starts acting up.

It's almost certainly not a preference option displayed in the user interface (e.g. in the Preferences window). Rather, LR stores a large amount of information about the state of the user interface in its preferences, and it sometimes manages to soil its preferences file. Resetting preferences can recover from that, as described in the article.
