Photoshop: Letter spacing grayed out on text on a path

I created a text on a path (circle) and it seems like the kerning / text spacing options are all grayed out. That's quite a bummer. Manually adjusting the letter spacing actually works though (using alt-left, alt-right).

As you can see here, "Metrics" and "Optical" are available, but not any numeric value.
If you type in a value, it gets immediately reset to 0.

You are looking at the "kerning" control which adjusts the spacing between individual letters (so you need to have an insertion point between letters for the options to be enabled). The pop-up to the right of kerning is for "tracking" which adjusts the spacing between every letter. Try that instead.
