Why does LR4 only allow Photoshop to be the primary external editor? Wasn't the client allowed to make this choice in LR3 and earlier versions. I have no plans to own PS, as it is high cost without a commensurate added value! I have two other external editors I would like to be able to choose from and this is not possible with the current version. Perhaps this needs to be reconsidered.

No, the primary editor has always either been Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.

You can create as many different secondary editors as you like though, using the bottom half of the Preferences > External Editors dialog and saving them as External Editor presets.

To further complicate...I downloaded a trial of Photoshop 6 which LR picked up and made its primary external editor. I decided I didn't want to upgrade to CS6 so I deleted the app. The primary editor still read CS6 thus not returning to the previous CS5. Now what??
