lens data metadata import bug for Nikon lenses

There appears to be a bug in showing imported metadata correctly in the Library module of lightroom Classic CC.  This would be similar to a bug that I see was evident in previous versions as per these two threads:

https://forums.adobe.com/thread/2130950

https://forums.adobe.com/thread/2166314

In essence, I've just done a bulk import of all my old photos, which include thousands where the lens metadata is recorded properly against the image, which I can verify by opening the image on my Mac using preview, then using the Inspector.

So, for example the metadata for my lens in the Inspector reads:

However, the panel in Lightroom omits the brand specific information and shows as follows:

So, only 16.0-35.0 mm f/4.0 is shown rather than AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G ED VR.

My problem is even more pronounced in that the lens I have used for the last few years - my trusty 28-300 has also not been imported properly across over 6,000 images, yet, strangely for 165 it has.....

Exactly the same lens was used, and the metadata is intact on the original file.

Can anyone please suggest what has happened here?

Some people have tried to help on the Forum thread here, but we can only conclude it is a reoccurrence of the previous bug:

Many thanks!

Hi,

I downloaded the sample images, 4 JPEGs and 1 raw (NEF).

Nikon cameras usually write generic lens names (e.g. 28.0-300.0 mm f/3.5-5.6) into NEF raw files.

Some other camera manufacturers will write more descriptive names in their raw formats that usually includes the exact lens model + lens information such as focal length and min/max aperture values.

The EXIF lens name is what gets displayed in Lightroom and Bridge metadata.

The lens inspector you mentioned might be overriding the generic lens name based on some assumptions (via the lens EXIF metadata) that it is a Nikon branded lens of a certain model.

There are scenarios where 2 lenses (e.g. Nikon and a 3rd party lens) share nearly (sometimes exactly) the same lens EXIF metadata. In those cases, the lenses might be identified incorrectly if there is no unique metadata to disambiguate them.

Hope that helps.
