Photoshop: layer masks & brush tool problem

I have the following problem, when I paint in layer masks with the brush tool I don't see things change as I work, they only update if I turn the overall layer invisible and then visible. The healing brush and stamp tool work normally with instant feedback. I've tried deleting the preferences files to see if this would fix the problem, but it did not. And, since I deleted my preference files, I can no longer just click on the object that I want to move or adjust, I have to click on the actual layer in the layer panel, can someone remind me how to change this back as well?

Thanks!

The first problem is really strange. Not sure what could be causing that.

Is Photoshop up-to-date?

Hello!
For part 2, select the move tool and check auto-select layer.

What are the settings of the brush tool in the option bar? is its mode normal, 100% opacity, and its color black?

Bogdan, are you on Mac or Windows?

I'd first make sure Photoshop and the OS are up to date:

Keeping Photoshop Up-To-Date: http://adobe.ly/PS-Up-To-Date

After applying all the updates, restart the system and see if the problem persists.
