Photoshop Elements: Layer Masking won't work

I purchased Photoshop Elements 9 one month ago, just got a chance to work on something and I was trying to highlight eyes in a portrait. I copied the original, then selected unsharp mask, I created a layer mask after increasing the brightness of the eyes, and when I tried to use layer mask to "erase" the black layer, nothing happens. (sorry, don't know all the technical terms just yet) I did work initially, but not the second try, I have the settings at normal and 100% and I even removed and reinstalled the program, still nothing, any suggestions?

Jodi, Are you painting on the layer mask with the Brush Tool, or the Eraser Tool?

You want to use the brush tool with the foreground color set to white.
