Photoshop: Layer mask: can't reveal complete image when unmasking previously edited areas

In my layer mask, I am having trouble getting my image to reveal completely when editing areas of a mask. Another way to put it is this: I'm editing my layer mask, adding back areas I want to see, and they appear opaque, not 100% of the color they truly are.

I've experimented with the brush tool and the eraser tool. I've made sure my black is at RGB 0-0-0/ white at 255-255-255. It doesn't make a difference. I've made sure my brushes are at 100 % opacity and on the Normal setting. I've made sure the eraser is on Brush mode and at 100% opacity.

I've had more success in RGB and CMYK color modes. However, I mostly need to be working in the LAB color space.

Help! I don't know what else to try.
