Photoshop: Layer Comp and Layer Interaction

Have a way to include / exclude layers from being affected by Layer Comps. This could be like a checkbox in a Layers Properties.

Additionally, the move tool should have an option that can be checked that allows layers to be moved ACROSS ALL layer comps leaving their states "Unmodified".

I work with four other designers all of whom complain about Layer Comps being "Broken" due to this issue. I feel strongly about this idea and would LOVE to see it implemented.

Armaan, did you ever use ImageReady? It used to have a "Unify" feature to essentially do what you suggest:

(The Layer Comps feature was based on the state-based animation/rollover model in ImageReady)

Hey Jeffrey,

ImageReady was king in it's day but it doesn't exist anymore right? From what I've seen layer comps are being used while designing –

a) Various sections of websites that have some common elements which may not necessarily be able to be compiled into smart objects due to there being layers between them.

b) Frame breakouts for animations.

In both these cases there is a need for the ability to move or keep in place layers across layer comps. At the moment, we're using a hack to achieve this ( duplicating the moved elements, deleting the old version, showing the duplicated one on each layer comp, and then updating that layer comp. )

This seems to be an unusually long winded route to take for a high frequency task. And I can truthfully tell you it takes up around 35% of my time when working on projects that require layer comps. Help guys!!

That's correct. ImageReady stopped development after CS2. I agree, Layer Comps could use some love. We'll see what bubble up.

It would also be nice if there was a way to update only certain layer comps, not all of them.

I explained my idea here:

If you wan't change only few layers, you could be interested in Timeline panel. Frame 1 could be composition 1 and frame 2 another compositon. It's dirty solution, but could help :-D You can change same properties like in layer comps.  Anyway I am not sure if you can use this together with layer comps.
