Layer setting for layers to show (override visib.) in a "preview/peek mode" while hold down key

I often wish I could just hold down a key to preview/sneak peek a certain layer or layers (ie. line art, fx, etc) on top of the currently visible ones I'm working on without having to actually toggle the visibility settings for the layers in question.

Hit key to toggle or while key is down?

I've figured if you had a button like the Lock modes buttons in the layer panel that would make marked layers show up in this preview-mode you could have every "preview/peek layer" show while you're holding down a certain key.

It would definitely save lots of time/hassle for everyone who turn one or many layers off to work on what's underneath in a painting or manipulation workflow.

For checking line art over what you're painting or for painting/manipulating a scene with fog this would also be amazing. You would need to turn the fog off for working on what's underneath and could just preview lots of half-opaque layers, adjustment layers etc for the full composit on for a split second to check the final result and keep painting/manipulating without breaking flow.
