Layer kind icon shows black/white circle in Layers panel

I'm stumped. I was looking at a document I created yesterday, and the layers panel doesn't show the kind of adjustment layer, as I think it should (and does for my other documents). Here is the layer panel for the document in question (left) and another document with distinct layer-kind icons:

The top three layers in the first document are all adjustment layers (Hue, Curves and Curves from top to bottom), but they all show with a black/white circle icon. Of the four TIFFs I created yesterday, two have the generic layer-kind icon, and two have distinct icons for different layer kinds. If I have two documents open at the same time, the layers panel changes according to which document is in front.

Any thoughts?

Photoshop 19.1, Macintosh High Sierra.

i have this nearly all the time ... please notify me if there's any solution. switching to bigger layer icons brings up the correct ones but needs too much space.

Hi Photoshopguru_GER

It turns out that this is an interaction of aspect ratio and layer icon size. Yes, switching to larger icons solves the problem, but so does making the image taller.

This is incredibly annoying, since you need to adjust the layer icons every time you switch to a file with a different aspect ratio (crop ratio).

I would file a bug report on this forum, but the chances of it being addressed are, I suspect, just about zero.

Yes, there's really no excuse for this behavior. The adjustment layer type icons should always be visible regardless of canvas size.
