PHOTOSHOP - Layer control over spot colours

I'd love to see the ability for Photoshop to control spot colours better with layers. There could be a little toggle on/off switch on the layer that assigns that layer to a certain spot colour in the job. Then Levels or any other layer effect could be easily applied non constructively. For me that's be a godsend as I have to create an alpha channel copy before I make any changes to the spot plate so I can go back if not needed later.
Obviously the spot would be assigned to an effect and not a normal layer as I've done in the screenshot. Just realised... duhhhhh!

It’s not the first time the issue has come up.

Though I thought there were more or different threads ... maybe I’m confusing it with another Forum.

Apologies, I looked but couldn't find a thread initially.

Seems too good to be true though or someone on the Photoshop team surely would have incorporated it by now. Makes me think I've missed the obvious why it can't be done.

Not sure if there is a definitive »why it can't be done« but I think Photoshop Layers so far are limited with regard to the numbers of Channels they support.
What does seem likely to me is that for Blend Modes, Adjustment Layers, ... to incorporate additional Channels would be quite difficult to implement.
And if one would want to include bleed settings things could get extremely complicated, I guess ...
