Any plans to resolve the lasso tool use-inducing crash of PS CC? It's been an issue for some time now.

I guess we'll need some more information to try to reproduce your problem.

What OS are you using? Is the OS up to date? What version of Photoshop? Is Phothsop up to date? Are you using a Wacom tablet? Are the tablet drivers up to date? Which lasso tool exactly are you using and how, that makes Photoshop crash? Have you tried re-installing Photshop? Have you tried resetting your preferences?

I tried the lasso tool in any combination possible and didn't got a crash. I am on Windows 10, latest Photoshop and tried mouse and Wacom tablet.

What does the crash log say in it?

A crash with the Lasso tool is news to us.  This is a VERY commonly used tool, so I would expect to hear lots of complaints if there was an easy-repro bug.  How long have you had this problem?  Does it happen all the time?  I cannot reproduce this issue on either Win or Mac.  The info that Alex suggests is a great place to start as is the crash log that Jeff asked about.

Thanks,
David

I also has a problem with Lasso Tool (latest CC2017, Windows 10) at work. Sometimes using it hangs Photoshop. PS doesn't crash, so there's no log, but it becomes unresponsive. This happens 2-4 times a day and I can't seem to figure out the exact way to reproduce it >:(

Hiya Sergey,

What other apps are you running when this happens?  Does it happen with all files or only specific ones?  What is the file size you're working with and how complicated are the selections you're making?

I'd like to help you nail this down, but I can't repro this and there seems to be an important factor missing.

Thanks,
David

Hi David, thanks for your reply.
For the apps, here're the apps I have constantly turned on:
iTunes, Creative Cloud, Sublime Text 3, Slack, Monosnap (for making screenshots), Teamviewver, Google Hangouts, Mail, Chrome, latest Photoshop CC2017 and Animate CC2017. Additionally, I have AHK (AutoHotKey, a tool for scripting) and Ditto (clipboard manager) running. I come from Mac so I also remapped Alt, Winkey and Ctrl to resemble Mac layout with KeyTweak.
This happens on all files, previously saved and new, large and small (mostly I work on 1024x1024 images with 10-30 layers). Considering the settings, I have GTX1060 turned ON in preferences, Cache settings is on Default, Photoshop uses 10gb of 16gb RAM. Two displays, main is Wacom Cintiq 22HD graphic tablet with latest drivers.
I constantly use lasso with Alt-key (when it switches to polygonal lasso while holding Alt-key and if you mouse-click-and-hold, it uses a regular lasso). Several times PS froze when I used lasso while trying to scroll documente (like when you zoomed in and to paint the selection further you take mouse cursor to document edge and it scrolls automatically), several times it hanged when the lasso line was intersecting with a visible panel (like Info Panel or custom MagicPicker color wheel), several times it hanged just while painting the selection.
I paint lasso selections a _lot_, basically several times a minute sometimes. Mostly they aren't complicated: I use 1-3 combined lasso selections to lock a plane and further paint on it (GIF https://www.dropbox.com/s/gohxwcmaxaxw1n5/selections.gif?dl=0 ).
A day before yesterday PS froze 4 times, but yesterday it didn't at all :/
Also I have Overscroll turned ON and a lot of custom extensions: I know the first thing you recommend is to get rid of them, but they're crucial for my pipeline, and because these freezes aren't obvious, I can't spend several days without them

Howdy Sergey,

First, thank you so much for the thoughtful and detailed summary.  That's super helpful!

Next, I see a couple of things that are kinda red flags, based on other users' feedback.  Apps that do screenshots, scripting, and keyboard layouts can be dicey.   Not trying to throw anyone under the bus, but the truth is, those kinds of apps are often poorly tested and have unexpected side effects.  Could you try without any of them running?

Similarly, and this based only on forum posts, when I see Wacom these days, my first thought is "physically disconnect and uninstall immediately" cuz many, many times, the tablet is a major contributor to the problem.  That might not be the case here at all, but it wouldn't hurt to remove it as an unknown variable.

Finally, custom extensions, as you mentioned, are also often major sources of issues.  You could try for a day or two without them and see if the problem resolves itself?

In all cases, there's no OBVIOUS smoking gun, but taking that analogy further, the air sure smells like gun powder from multiple sources!

Hope that helps,
Thanks,
David

Thanks David,
The first thing I did on Monday was I turned overscroll Off (because of this scroll-with-lasso-freeze thing I had). And... no freezes whatsoever. Don't know if it's this option to blame, I'll continue to observe. Reinstalling the Wacom drivers and getting rid of screenshot app would be the next thing to do. The extensions I use were written by me so I hope :D it's not them to blame.
I'll update with my findings later this week.
Cheers,
Sergey

Funny that the bug hasn't been found or known about it was around already 2011 - and yet still here we are at 2018 and it still persist in Photoshop CC

Hi Jamie, I'm not seeing any crash reports under your email address you use to log in here. Can you submit a log with your email address: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/submit-crash-reports.html

Hi Jeffrey. The app doesn't crash to that extent. It just freezes and I have to force quit through the task manager.  I initially thought it was a resource issue as I had a large Illustrator file open and I was switching between apps. But it did the same issue when just photoshop is open. I'm using the polygon lasso and it happens after say 10 clicks. Tried on my mac and I don't have that issue.

Just did another test. No issues when using a mouse instead of the tablet. Could it be a conflict between the tablet driver and the OS or photoshop?

Howdy Jamie,

Yeah, it's the tablet.  I wish I could say I didn't hear this all the time, but, I was raised to tell the truth...  Have you checked to see if there's a more updated driver?  You might want to contact Wacom...8-(

Sorry,
David

Let's doublecheck some settings. It may help if we could see your Photoshop System Info. Launch Photoshop, and select Help > System Info... and copy/paste the text in a reply.

I can not see in box after paste but guess it's all in there. I was on the 1803 win 10 pro and today it just let me update to the 1809 build. (enhanced details now works) Do not know if this is going to make any difference. But I tried the polygonal lasso with a ton of clicks and it did not freeze up. so we will see. last few times it happened after I had done a ton of work and had not saved in a while so lost it all on the freeze any way here is the pasted stuff. There's something really messed up with the GPU drivers. I'm seeing Intel cards listed, and both AMD and NVIDIA drivers listed listed as drivers.

I do not know about the AMD. But when I bought my new system I thought that photoshop/lightroom would work better with bigger, better graphics card. So I kicked in bucks for a nividia 1080 g force 8gb upgrade (32 gb ram new dell xps8930 system) then I found out that instead of just an upgraded card like I thought, it has 2 cards the intel (ub 630- I think)and the 1080 gforce, and that photoshop can not use 2 cards. so as far as I can tell it is just using the intel one.  by the by, I had the auto save off because I thought it was going to slow stuff down but due to the latest freeze's I have that turned back on now so at least I will not lose as much work if it happens again. but like I said hopefully the 1809 win10 update that was needed for the new enhanced details update in LR- makes it play nicer with the lasso. thanks for trying to help out.

Mixing the two cards/drivers is not recommended. I suspect a lot of your issues would be abated by using the more powerful, dedicated NVIDIA card rather than the lower powered Intel card which shares your RAM with the CPU. See #7 here: GPU and graphics driver troubleshooting steps

I thought that as well.and went to that page before when I was having other PS issues, but going by step 7 , when I right click and try to go to nvidia it says NVIDIA Display settings are not available, with small print saying, you are not using a display attached to the Nvidia. and I could not figure out how to get past that issue (my other issues were fixed by manual update of the intel driver)

Do you have a monitor attached to the NVIDIA card? Is the NVIDIA card plugged into a PCI slot, or some other way?

I am looking into this now. I bought a benq sw2700pt and when I set up I used a certain way because it said to do it that way to get the best color calibration or something I forget. so I am downloading the user manuals to see other ways to hookup. So I will get back to you when I figure it out how to get it on the nvidia  and let you know if it makes any difference. thanks.

Jeffrey,   well I am hooked up now to the graphics card and in photoshop under performance it shows it is using the nvidia 1080. so we will see how  things behave. In step 7 there was no sniffer exe. but probably not an issue. Thanks for your efforts.   James

Jeffrey,  seems like I am good to go. Used it quite a bit for last 4 hours with no issues. (though I have started to go hard core on the pen a lot instead) but did use polygonal and regular lasso quite a bit, and patch with no problems. Thanks for your efforts,  Jim

I'm having same issue. Crashes on lasso and patch removal - maybe more. You think it could be related to graphic card driver? I'm running ATI Radeon HD 5570 split screen.

Possibly. I'm not seeing any crash reports under your email address you use to log in here. Can you submit a log with your email address: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/submit-crash-reports.html

It may help if we could see your Photoshop System Info. Launch Photoshop, and select Help > System Info... and copy/paste the text in a reply.

I was with the machine all morning until I gave up. I have to go back to get that. Is there a white paper on this topic I can look at?

If you haven't done so already, please submit all Crash Reports along with your email address: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/submit-crash-reports.html It may help if we could see your Photoshop System Info. Launch Photoshop, and select Help > System Info... and copy/paste the text in a reply.

Thanks for the message.  Here is system info.  As a CS6 user, I also use Ctrl Alt to change brush size and opacity.  With CC, it works sometimes but usually causes a system freeze.  I am trying to not use it but became a habit years ago and it is hard to stop.   Also, when I use the pen tool to select something it always selects the inverse so I have to invert again to get the selection I want.  Could these problems all be connected?  Joe

i was having the same issue but after disabling the 'use graphic processor' from preferences everything is now back to normal. i also checked the  troubleshoot-gpu-graphic card and realize my card was below system requirement. Hope this help!
