Label field and why it’s function is not clearly defined.

As a Travel Photographer, I have 26,000 images. I populate the keyword, title and caption fields. Additionally, I have used the Label field for identifying specific subjects such as “church”, or someone’s name. Only recently, I used the Text search across 26k images to locate a subject. I found that not all images with a Label Keyword came up. After a very helpful dialogue on Adobe Forums, I learned that the Label field is to identify colour labels only. So my question is, Why doesn’t the Label field have a pop-up note defining its purpose, or in the alternative, a drop-down with executable choices?

Label is arbitrary text. You can assign whatever you want to be a specific label. Matching label text and color is system-specific.

You could make this a feature suggestion- save both label color (as hex or web colors) plus label text. This would allow adding support for more label colors.

I am not a tech wizard, so your reply is not fully understood. If I understand correctly, if I colour code an image, let’s say red, I can type “red” in the Label field and do a sort by label red? What I need to understand is can I also use the label field to add any other sort word?

You can define your own labels in a label set, so that a red label is shown when the label text is ‘Not yet processed’ or anything else you may want to use for a red label. You can also have multiple label sets, so there is no way that Adobe can display what ‘correct’ labels are.

Thank you, but can I use the label field to sort by subject( nothing to do wth colour labels, ie, cars, or boats etc, and sort across an entire catalog for cars, or boats? I do realize I can sort by entering in the Keyword field, but adding a sort word in the Label field is less cumbersome and more easily checked?.

In either Bridge or Lightroom, you can define what label is assigned to the color red (for example.) That label can be any text you want. If the label in the file matches the label defined in the app, you see the label color. If not, that file is shown with a white label but the text is preserved.
