Lightroom: Keywords Not Being Saved to DNG Files (LR3.6)

Hello,

In Lightroom 3.6, none of the keywords that I add to DNG files (Pentax K-X), along with their respective JPEG sister files created simultaneously by the camera, are being saved to the files. This is despite having "Automatically Write Changes Into XMP" selected. It also doesn't work using the two different manual save options [i.e., (1) "right click," "metadata," "write metadata to file;" and (2) "right click" "update DNG preview and metadata"].

I add the keyword(s) in the 'Keywording' component, observe what looks like an attempt to write to the file (small, fast white progress bar at top left of screen). Exit Lightroom as a precaution. Go to Windows 7 (64bit) Explorer. Refresh. No tags appear in the 'Tags' column.

However, when I do the exact same thing for solitary JPEG files (i.e., ones that were shot alone and not created in camera with a simultaneous DNG), the tags are reflected almost immediately under the 'tags' column.

I have also verified keyword presence / absence in the various files using a third party metadata software reader.

Hopefully it's something simple (and 'fixable') that I am missing. Thx in advance.

I just checked - keywords seem nestled comfortably in the DNG but Windows 7 can't read them - I'm not sure Windows 7 ever could (read DNG metadata), could it?

No, Windows 7 does not grok DNG/XMP keywords.

If you look in those DNGs with EXIFTool, you will see the keywords.

Isn't there a DNG thing for WIndows so it can read them, like there is for NEFs?

Hello, thanks for the feedback.

Now seeing brand new behavior, with the original issue resolved automatically (Nice). I assume it has to do with restarting my computer, Windows 7 Explorer and Lightroom since last night, after having installed, uninstalled and tested several programs.

So now what it's doing is: with DNG / JPEG file pairs, I add keywords in lightroom and these DO show up immediately in Windows 7 Tag column but only for the DNG file, NOT for the corresponding JPEG. For the solitary JPEGs (ie. with no corresponding DNG), these JPEGs show keywords normally.

When I look at the path below the image preview in Library - Loupe view, it only shows the filename for the .DNG file, with no mention of the corresponding .JPG filename. So when I go to keyword, is it likely that am I just keywording the .DNG file, and not the .JPG? Is there a way to keyword both at the same time?

Thanks in advance!

I don't see any tags in Windows 7 when adding them to DNG file in Lightroom (and saving xmp), so you are doing better than me in this regard.

Personally, I realized way way back that having jpegs be treated as a sidecar to the raw was not going to work for me. Its like having a piece of cake that you can't eat.

So, it wouldn't surprise me if the keywording only affected the main DNG file and not the sidecar - sounds like that's what's happening. Dunno if that's normal.

Sorry I'm not much help...

Bit of a digression but does anyone know how to add keywords to the DNG and JPG simultaneously, even though only the DNG is listed in the path in the Lightroom Library Panel. Thx.

I am seeing the same behavior. When I update keywords or metadata, such as caption. They are saved immediately into xmp, but aren't stored into the sidecar jpg. I have to re-export if I want update keywords and metadata for any jpg sidecar file. Any solution to avoid this re-export would be appreciated. Thx.
