JPEG Files saved with Adobe, have JPG extension but are not recognized as JPEGS

When I save a Photoshop (PSD) file as JPEG using Save As, the saved file has a jpeg extension, but no software will open it.  Im running on a MAC (El Capitan 1011.6) with latest version of Photoshop 2018 CC. This just started happening after recent update.  I tried uploading an image and to this forum and this is the error message: "Sorry! We were unable to upload your image because it is not a PNG, JPG, or GIF file. Please ensure your image is one of these formats and try again."

Can you describe exactly what you are doing? I save jpeg images from Photoshop every day on my Mac and I have never encountered this problem. Maybe this is an El Capitan issue (although that is supported). I use High Sierra.

If you’re using Windows 10, try going to SETTINGS and find default apps. You just match them up with file extensions. It’s not intuitive. For example, if you see a jpg extension with a PHOTOS icon, click on the icon and it gives you other options. Good luck!

Is it possible that you're typing the extension in the Name field, rather than selecting JPEG from the drop-down Format list?  Sometimes, especially if you click on a named file in the Save As dialog and it has a .jpg extension, you don't realise that Photoshop is still the format selected. One clue that something is wrong is if you take a multi-layered PSD to Save As and don't get the Warning Triangle with File must be saved as a copy notice.
