Lightroom mobile: Issues synching to Lightroom Classic desktop

I have a question about synching LR mobile with my desktop MAC — I’ve just got back from my first photo road trip using my new iPad 10.5 and LR mobile as my primary storage/backup on the road.

Each evening I copied that day’s images via the camera roll into LR and left my iPad open all night to synch those images to the cloud.  In total I took 2389 images and in LR Mobile if I use the gear wheel under the synch cloud graphic it tells me under CLOUD STORAGE that I have backed up 2389 photos and have Available Cloud Storage of 939 GB of 1 TB, both of which are correct (24 MB files).

Yet when I start the synch process on my desktop and click on the cloud synch graphic on the iPad, it tells me that its uploading all 2389 images (VERY slowly!!) and on my desktop it tells me its synching xxx photos (also VERY slowly) -- where xxx starts around 180 photos, declines slowly, then there’s a gap when it shows nothing, then starts again with another batch.  My understanding was that I had already uploaded all 2389 images while on the road and all that should happen with the synch to the desktop is that these should be download over a fast (100MB) internet link — as it is its taking hours, presumably with repeating the slow upload?

I looked at the photos on my desktop LR and only some of the photos were there, the rest are in the process of uploading — so obviously they didn’t upload when I was on the road (some of the hotel connections were slow, so I’m not really surprised).  However, that raises the question as to what the data provided by LR mobile means: when it it tells me under CLOUD STORAGE that I have backed up 2389 photos and have Available Cloud Storage of 939 GB of 1 TB what does this mean?? — obviously it does NOT mean that it has actually uploaded 2389 photos!

Looking at LR on my desktop to see  if I can understand what’s going on and I’m now much more confused!

First, if I look at LR Mobile in Preferences in LR on my desktop it confirms my account info and again says: Uploads: 2389 photos synched — when according to the tally on my iPad there are still over 1000 to go!

Second, there is a box at the bottom of that page that gives ”Synch Activity (69 Uploading, 1918 Downloading, 0 Pending)” — at this particular point in time.  According to the numbers on my iPad in LR Mobile I haven’t actually uploaded 1918 images, so how can they be being downloaded??  This suggests that the initial data that I had uploaded all 2389 photos was correct and that it’s now downloading them from the cloud to the desktop — but this doesn’t appear to be true because if I go and look at the individual files in LR on my desktop there are indeed about 2000 missing (i.e.: yet to be downloaded!!!).  If the images have indeed been uploaded and all that LR Mobile doing is synching metadata, then there’s something seriously wrong somewhere as those ought to be small files and upload fast — my rough timing for each upload suggests it’s uploading the full image files of 24 mb each.

Third, underneath the “Sync Activity” line there’s box showing: Synch type, Asset path/link, and Synch details/errors — but the entries are too long and overflow the table — how do I expand the table to see the full entry??

Finally, this morning LR Mobile says it's uploading with 1028 Pending, 100% -- LR on my desktop (in Preferences pane) says in Synch Activity 0 Uploading, 1028 Downloading, 0 Pending , and in Library under my iPad Pro it shows Imported Photos 1361 (and they show in Collections!).  The good news is that 1028+1361=2389 so it accounts for all my images! -- the bad news is that nothing is happening, LR Mobile has been uploading for 3 hours now, but the total (1028 Pending) hasn't changes, and on LR desktop Synch Activity says 1028 Downloading, again for past 3 hours, but nothing is actually happening!

HELP!!!!!!!!

Well I can’t answer your questions... but I do know that from my experience so far that understanding what is syncing where between iPad / Mac etc would defeat a time lord! A total mystery, as for the pending issue, I could only resolve the hanging pending photos issue in Lightroom cc classic by searching in my cloud account by individual name and deleting each one. I really think the new lightroom CC has been released prematurely and without any guidance as to what the ... it is doing!

Thanks Dave, I'm glad I'm not the only one that finds it a total mystery!!

It takes time... I have had that issue on several occassions, thinking nothing is happening, but it just needs time. Lots of time! Give it some and see if it changes...

Catherine, thanks for the reassurance -- my iPad now says "all synched and backed up", rather than just "backed up" -- so synching takes 3 days!!!!  The only ongoing activity is that LR desktop is still uploading 1000+ of something!!

Yes, with big batches it is a waiting game. We are now moving files around that are roughly are the size of one hard drive 10 years ago. My phone pics are 25 mb. I guess we gotten so used to swish and go that we do forget that some stuff needs hours... Glad it worked out for you. Succes with the 1000+ still to go. ;o)))

I'm syncing Lightroom Mobile with LR CC Classic for quite some time already, here are some tips:

1) Make sure you enable "prevent from sleep" in LR Mobile options and leave the app open during sync (the screen shouldn't turn off then). It might take some time but the upload in LR Mobile is much faster than in LR CC Classic. If you have unlimited data plan better use LTE than slow hotel wifi ;-)

2) After the sync in LR Mobile is done (should say something like "all synced and saved") you can now open LR CC Classic. The sync there takes a lot of time and is dead slow but it works.

3) For whatever reason LR CC Classic sometimes decides to update metadata of some pictures. That's when you see that it uploads some pictures (it actually doesn't upload the picture but just the metadata – though as I said: Sync in LR CC Classic is dead slow. I guess that's why they brought the new LR CC to the desktop as syncing there is much faster).

4) Wait until all is synced and everything should work fine. During sync the already synced pictures appear in LR CC Classic but from my experience it's best to wait until all is done.

5) Tip: In LR CC Classic preferences under tab "Lightroom CC" you can choose where the synced photos get saved. Choose the location there where you normally save pictures after import. You can also choose that LR CC uses subfolders etc when syncing with LR mobile. That way your mobile synced photos get saved at the same location and in the same structure as all your other pictures.

6) Sometimes something goes wrong and some pictures are stuck syncing.

a)To find out which open the LR Classic CC preferences and go to Lightroom CC tab where it shows you the stuck photos. If you click on the file path it should open the picture on the web (lightroom.adobe.com). Normally the picture just shows as an exclamation mark there.

b) If that's the case open the same picture on your iPad in Lightroom Mobile and do some mini edit (like changing sharpness, etc.). Click on the cloud-symbol and then "Force sync". Then LR Mobile uploads this picture again to the cloud and most time it gets synced fine with LR CC Classic.

Hope that helps ;)

Hello David.

Thanks for your reassuring reply -- yes indeed, after a VERY long time (5 days for 2389 images, each 24mb!) everything is now synched!!

Thanks, John.

How about getting adobe to make LR for iPad able to import from albums in Photos rather than just from camera roll, then we can forget about cloud issues and do it quickly through iTunes. So simple yet so far away! Sort it out please Adobe!
