Lightroom: Issue with Map module in OS X 10.10 (Yosemite)

On OS X 10.10 (Yosemite), the map in Lightroom's Map module is very slow to load. It takes several minutes before the first part of the map appears, and some parts don't load at all, saying instead "Sorry, we have no imagery here", even though the part in question is on Google Maps. When zooming in or out, it's the same, it takes very long to update.

Same for me, google maps, bing maps etc. all work fine but not LR. I have been in touch with Adobe today (and a while back but they would not support me as I was on Yosemite Beta) and they acknowledge it is an issue many are suffering from.

Yes - when I do this (my default browser is google chrome) LR then loads the maps without complaint. It's as if the browser is fetching the maps for LR.

I'm glad Adobe are aware of it. I raised a support call with them about it yesterday but the support person was not aware of any issues with Yosemite! Got me to reinstall Lightroom, create a new catalog etc!
I raised a support call with Apple about it this evening as well.

I hope Adobe take on board that this does appear to be related to broadband speed. Greater than 10mbs maps is ok, less than it is not!

That's not true! I have two macs - one works, the other doesn't, both on identical LR/OSX releases. Also, I can kludge the non-working one into working by pre-fetching the map tiles on a browser.

It isn't speed related. It may be related to the number of images.

Well it is for me, as I mention in an earlier post my broadband is 3 to 5 m&s and maps does not work. If I plug my 4G phone to my Mac which achieves 15mbs maps works fine. Same iMac, same catalogue!

After the installation of the module Yosemite maps of my lightroom 5.6 974 614 10.10 x64 on MAC OS has become painfully slow. tags saved images are correct but the maps are loaded very slowly. Can I do anything?

Same problem occurring with LR 4.4.1 and Yosemite. Will the fix be applied to this version, too? It's not exactly obsolete.

Surprised this wasn't identified by Adobe earlier. It's not exactly a 'hidden' problem.

In my case i am using official Yosemite and lost map module on upgrade, i had a version LR 4 on at the same time which also failed in map module.

I mentioned in my thread that i only did the Yosemite upgrade after googling if any issues an Adobe said in tests this all worked fin

AS a CC user and paying monthly i would very much like to see a fix

For further reference if i geotag via a phone app and load that in LR 5.6 i can tag the images but no see the map.

Not that clever but i think this is a firewall kind of issue

Mine has had a clean install of Yosemite and CC Photoshop and LR 5.5 as far as i can tell everything else works as it should

Don't think it's a firewall problem. I have permitted LR explicitly in the firewall settings, and it still exhibits the issue - long wait, maybe one tile, then "Sorry no imagery here"

I think it's probably important for Adobe to issue some sort of response here. Soon. Chris? Ben? Are you reading this?

I am sure it is not Firewall. As I have mentioned before, if you get 4G on your phone with a download speed circa 15mbs try plugging it into ur Mac and try again. It works for me, not a long term solution though...

The reason i wondered about firewall is my main connection is ethernet on occasion when i switch into map module all connection is lost including safari, if i switch over for wifi i get access back again though not in LR. Once access is back i switch into Ethernet and alls ok again.

I was thinking perhaps the request for the map is sent and i get a response that asks is this UK once i say it is then it stops responding. I thought it was upload speed that did the search on one port then download on another port.

I went in the modem settings and tried every protection i could find but had no affect.

Maybe the loading speed (downlink connection) of the map if degraded due to the flooding of the uplink connection ? But what is LR sending out at this rate ?!

Morning Dave, so am i on ethernet but in my case as mentioned when i try wifi its like a firewall. I am not a programer so maybe this is rubbish but i assume that LR must have a line of code that determines how maps communicates with google and the protocols it uses. Is it possible that Apple and Adobe are using code now that only work on certain networks.

I do know that some people who have Lightroom and Yosemite can use Yosemite in my photography group successfully so the question is why.

Is it regional
Are folk like us using ISP with a certain network protocol
Do we all share an app that others who have working copies don't

I also have Photomatix and Autopano plug in use Sky ISP tried with and without iPhoto i also have a superdrive connected as well as a time machine i am telling this in case we have something in common.

One other small point is i am getting a number of bluetooth connection failures with the keyboard and mouse

Yes clutching at straws but i really would like maps back lol

Adobe should really spend some time telling us what is going on with their analysis. The Map module is rendered ABSOLUTELY USELESS in Yosemite.

Allan, I used to a programmer writing Geographical Information Systems (lots of maps!) but moved into the business side of things many years ago now. My personal opinion is that Bryan is on the right track, it appears LR is trying to upload something, who knows what (and why and to who is a whole other question!!).

I do not think it is a ISP or regional issue, otherwise Google Maps (and others like Bing maps, Apple Maps etc.) would not work either.

I just wish Adobe would get their finger out, they have known about this for 3 months now and have not even had the courtesy to acknowledge a problem, let alone fix it!!r

It's not ISP or regional. I have one LR5.6/OSX10.10 that works with maps, and one that doesn't. If you run nettop you'll see that it's attempting to upload a lot of something: being kind, this might be mapping related...but I have unticked the reverse geocoding options in catalog settings, and it's still doing it.

I can "pre-fetch" tiles by clicking "report a map error" bottom right of the map pane, but this isn't the way market leading software should operate.

Nor, quite frankly, is the lack of comment from Adobe. C'mon guys, I've had my bank account hacked because of your issues, and now I can't even use the software I have paid for.

I suspect that the root cause of inaction is that only 11 of us have registered this as a problem (see top of this page).

Agree with Mark Twells, I don't like the way that Adobe are keeping quiet about this problem. Some comment would be welcome even if it's just to admit that they aren't sure what the problem is!

The fact that lots of data is being uploaded is very worrying.

I traced my network traffic and attached is a screen grab of the result, LR is definitely uploading / downloading a lot of who know what!

Mark, Dave and Martin i bow to your knowledge thank you saves me a lot of hassle looking, have any of you considered re installing Mavericks i admit it really annoys me 2 of the largest companies and they can't save this seems crazy

Just to add to the above, the longer you leave the Maps module 'loading' the bigger these numbers get! After 2 minutes they are 10Mb and 48Mb respectively. The screen shot above was after just a few seconds of Maps 'loading'.

It seems that there are some issues with the google maps statistics. Simply open the console.app and filter for lightroom. It shouldn't be to hard to fix...

I think it would help if everyone experiencing this problem would report back the following:

- Open the "Console" app and see if you are getting the same "HTML Trace" messages that Jan Freuer observed two posts above.

- Open Activity Monitor and report on the Data Received/Sec and Data Sent/Sec. Several people have observed that data sent (uploads) is unusually large.

Click on the Launchpad in the dock (the rocketship icon), type "Console", hit enter. Do this right as LR is trying to display the map. If you're getting the "HTML Trace" messages that Jan Freuer saw, you'll see them displayed.

Do you also have unusually large data sent/sec, similar to what Dave Roberts reported above?

On your second machine, which you reported didn't have the problem, are the Console messages present, and does it have unusually large data sent/sec?

Narrowing this down makes it somewhat more likely Adobe will address it sooner. (And I agree that users shouldn't have to do that, but that's the reality of today's consumer software.)

yes - I checked it with nettop, mentioned it in the thread above. I have very very slow tile fetch and failure, the same console traces, and lots and lots of data being sent out.

My issues are identical.

I haven't checked the second machine. maps on it work, but there are only about 6 images on it, and none are geotagged.

Yes, your console log also shows "HTML Trace" errors from Lightroom, with names that indicate it's related to the maps.
