Photoshop CC 2017.0.0: Issue with exiting (esc) "Text edit" tool

  • 8
  • Problem
  • Updated 1 week ago
  • (Edited)
Sometimes when i try to Esc text edit mode (exit and cancel any changes) it somehow freezes text tool and doesn't allow me to exit it completely. None of shortcuts work anymore (Esc; CMD+Enter; Menu panel buttons) so i can't do anything, even save anything, because most of menu items is inactive. Only option is to Force quit PS and start again. Sometimes it happens every 10 edits and i literally need to save my project every time i plan to edit text, because it can freeze anytime.

Problem appears on Photoshop CC 2017.0.0 release Text tool for macOS Sierra 10.12.1.

Hi Klavs,

Sorry for the trouble with exiting text fields. If you're using 2017.0.0, you'll want to update to Photoshop CC 2017.1 which was released earlier this week.

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/uptodate.html#CheckUpdates

Let us know if that resolves it for you.

If this helps, i noticed, that it happens, while switching (Ctrl+Tab) between different files and copying or editing text. Not sure if thats the case, but i guess its better than nothing :/

Thanks for the added details Klavs, and thanks for updating. Strange that you're seeing this as I am unable to reproduce and I'm not seeing many reports of Type tool freezing.

I would think it may be related to a Font that could be causing the freeze. Have you gone through our Font troubleshooting? https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/troubleshoot-fonts-mac-os-x.html

Secondarily, have you tried resetting Photoshop's preferences to see if it is something in there? Restore preferences

Let me know how either of those go.

Hey Klavs,

How many fonts do you have on your system?  What are their sources?  Could you take a look at this link and check the integrity of your font caches?  https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/troubleshoot-fonts-photoshop.html  What you're encountering seems REALLY odd and I play with text all the time, every day.

Thanks,
David

Hey David & Pete, so far so good, after running PS for 2 days my problem seems to be gone. Im guessing the problem was solved with either one of those steps from trobleshoot - 2, 6, 7. Hopefully it will last for longer ;) Many thanks

Howdy Klavs,

Uh...I'm not sure what to say...

So, I ran this by the developer who made the fix and she said that even badly corrupted fonts shouldn't compromise functionality.  But I have heard of users with dicey fonts that hamstring their app.  It is POSSIBLE that the older fonts use one or more of these "naughty fonts" and that results in the font caches become corrupt, which then triggers the bug.  What are the names of the fonts in these older docs?  I'm afraid, however, that's all supposition based on the evidence.

Would it be possible to send me your font caches?  My email is david <dot> mohr <at> adobe <dot> com.  Also, just to again confirm, when you have this problem NONE of the methods to confirm text work, right?  You've tried the UI in the Options Bar as well as the <Enter> on the numeric keypad, right?  What about switching out of PS to another app and then coming back?  Is Photoshop responsive or is the app hung?  It might be that a corrupted font is hanging the app, but again, that's a guess.

Thanks,
David

Thanks for fast response David! I've sent you my font cache to e-mail.

I confirm:
  • NONE of the methods to confirm text work
  • tried the UI in the Options Bar as well as the <Enter> on the numeric keypad
  • switching out of PS to another app and then coming back NOT work
  • Photoshop is responsive, i can click on menu bar, but can't quit text tool or quit app normally, because while text tool is active most of options in menu bar is innactive
Looking forward to find solution

This is REALLY weird.  For what it's worth, what you are describing shouldn't happen.  Not saying that it isn't, just that it shouldn't...8-(

Are you positive that you've updated to the Photoshop CC 2017.1.0?  Would you mind double-checking under Help > System Info -- first line?

What other applications do you have running at the same time?  What other devices do you have hooked up to your machine?  Are you using a tablet?  Have you tried trashing your preferences at launch?

I'm kinda stumped on this one.  But, I'm totally on-board to help get to the bottom of this.  What time zone are you in?  I ask, cuz if this comes up again, would you be willing to email me and I could try remote-viewing your machine to get to figure out what's going on?  I'm in San Jose, California, so I'm on Pacific time, but I often work odd hours / from home.

Thanks,
David

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Photoshop Text Edit bug.

Apparently, on this last update of Photoshop 2017 (macOs Sierra), the text area is causing problems while editing it. I'm losing my work on multiple times due to a huge bug.

Essentially, when I click on a box text, the program is stuck on the edit and can't be canceled or confirmed. Everything else go crazy, the menu icons are disappearing when the mouse go over them, the menu is greyed out, and there's nothing else I can do if not force quit and hope the program will recover the file (not always).

Here's a screen of what is happening:

Just want to chime in. This bug is still happening.
At first I thought it was fonts conflicting from typekit and some old local fonts I have. I threw the old fonts out and restarted and I'm still losing hours of work to this bug.

I'm running Acrobat Pro, DW, Chrome, Spotify, FF, and Word in the background.

Howdy Shaun,

First, the apps in the background are pretty much what I run, 'cept trade DW for Outlook, so I seriously doubt there's any issue there.

What COULD be an issue is your font cache.  I understand that you dumped the old fonts, but did you regenerate your system (and PS) font caches?  If not, you've got two options -- (easy) trash your prefs on launch of PS or (harder) run through the steps found here: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/troubleshoot-fonts-photoshop.html.

Also, you might want to make sure the version you're running -- could you share the first line of Help > System Info here?

That really SHOULD fix you right up.  If not, please let us know for deeper troubleshooting.

Thanks,
David

Before I trash my prefs, do they get stored in the cloud so I can "re-sync" them? It tends to take a while to rearrange my panels and settings to the way I like them.

FWIW it occurred to me that it locks up when I hit the "esc" hotkey to exit text-editing mode. It's possible the esc key switch is sticking and that could cause all kinds of problems. I replaced the keyboard and haven't had a crash yet, but we'll see.

Unfortunately, no, your prefs are not stored in the cloud.  You can always make a backup copy of them.

I have encountered this bug numerous times. Usually when editing a text box and switching between applications and then coming back to edit the text. The only other thing I can think is happening is that I am pressing a random keyboard shortcut mistakenly whilst editing the text instead of in another application.

Hi Marc,

Have you been having the bug with 2017?  What OS are you running?  What other apps do you have running?  Any unusual hardware or pointing device (particularly a tablet)?  Have you tried trashing your preferences?  How many fonts do you have on your system?  This info could help figure out the cause...

Thanks,
David

v 2017.1.1
macOS Sierra 10.12.5
Apple Magic Mouse
595 font families › Rightfont font management › 116 active

Other apps can be various, has happened at multiple instances where a different selection of apps may have been open. Currently: Tyme2, Safari, Evernote, Mail, Illustrator, Acrobat

I think the last time the issue happened was when I was editing text, clicked the Mac sidebar to work out a value using the calculator and then went back to enter the value in the text box. Issue then kicked in and locked the ability to confirm changes.

Howdy Marc,

Nothing in your list jumps out at me.  I have heard of users having issues due to the Magic Mouse, so you could try with a regular mouse and see if the problem goes away.  And I'm not familiar with Tyme2.  One other idea, and I admit I'm going a little out on a limb, but it's possible your font cache has issues.  Run the cache testing tool found here: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/troubleshoot-fonts-photoshop.html

How frequently are you seeing this?  Would you be able to demo it to me?  I can set up a web-hosted screenshare...

Hi, I'm facing exactly the same problem described by Klavs Buss. Can't exit the edit text mode. Unfortunately, I don't know how to reproduce this bug. It has happened a couple of times, and when it happens I can not even close Photoshop normally (only through "Force Quit"). Photoshop 2017.1.1 Release (20170425.r.252 x64), macOS Sierra 10.12.5.

Hiya Paul,

Sorry you're encountering this.  If you could share any information you encounter about this bug, that would be awesome.  I have never seen this bug with 2017.1, so whatever you come up with would be handy for helping me run it down.  Particularly interesting would be what font you are using and knowing if you have ESC set to Cancel or Commit.

One idea would be to check your font cache for quirks.  You can find steps to test it here, particularly step #5 https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/troubleshoot-fonts-photoshop.html.  You can easily clear your cache simply by trashing your preferences.  Photoshop will automatically regenerate a new one for you.

Thanks,
David

Hi,

I run into the same problem from about 2-3 months. I Always use the newst version of macOS and CC (actually - Photoshop 2017.1.1 Release (20170425.r.252 x64), macOS Sierra 10.12.5).

It happens when I got few text areas and in one area I select for example a word, copy it and in second text area i paste it, previously select a text which I want to replace by new one. After paste I can't do anything. Can't exit, can't even save a work. Last time when it happens I was using Helvetica Neue, but I think it doesn't matters.

Exactly same problem here. Photoshop becomes unresponsive with the exception of that text field, in which I can still type or delete characters. Nothing else is responsive. When clicking on the Tools panel, the whole UI becomes empty and the text field becomes unresponsive as well.

Hi guys,

Sorry for the wait getting back to you -- I've been out of the office.

What other applications do you have running at the same time as Photoshop?  How about utilities, particularly screen capture apps?  What kind of hardware are you using?  Tablets?  Also, do you have this problem with all fonts and all files or only certain ones?

I'm pretty sure that there's another element missing here -- I can't repro the problem and if this problem were encountered generally, the forums would be on fire (type is a VERY commonly used tool).  Any help you shed on what makes your systems different would be very helpful.

Thanks,
David

Also, just a thought, are you sure that there's not a dialog hidden below/behind the active display which could be interfering with you?  I know that there were z-order issues before and I thought that they were all solved, but perhaps there's one manifestation left.

David

David,
1. Photoshop, Illustrator (sometimes), FontExplorerX Pro (6.0.1), iStat Menus, Monosnap (sometimes).
2. Happens with different kind of fonts.
3. Harware: Macbook Pro Retina 13-inch Late 2013, iMac 27-inch Mid-2011. All running same versions of OS and apps.
4. No dialog is hidden -- I've looked everywhere.
5. I'm positive it only happens when I try to exit the edit mode by pressing Esc, but not every time. If I press Cmd+Enter, everything is fine. But it could be because I use Esc more often.

Howdy Mark,

Thanks for the good info.  That really does save time.

Is you Application Frame on or off (under the Windows menu)?  What about your Options Bar?  How many documents do you have open at a time?  Is your Glyph Panel visible?  Are you always using the same group of fonts (say Ariel, Avenir, and Times, or whatever) when triggering this bug or is it different bugs every time?

And to confirm, once this happens, CMD+Enter also fails as well?  You have to Force Quit?

Thanks,
David

1. App Frame is on.
2. Options Bar is on.
3. From 1 to 5 documents at a time, usually. But the bug occurs even if I only have one and even if it's a new blank document with just a text layer on it.
4. Glyph Panel not visible (I never use it).
5. I use about 20 groups of fonts for different clients, happens to all of them, even if it's a new font I just started using today.
6. Yes, ones the bug occurs, Cmd+Enter doesn't help. Only force-quit.

I just your answers were different, cuz you just shot down all my theories.  But it is what it is...

You're running 10.12.5?

Can you get this to happen reliably?  Does it happen without switching between applications?  I'm wondering if it's a state/focus issue now...

Well, David, now I can locate my problem. The bug is hiden in the using of PS 2015 action (inclouding Type-tool) copied automatically in process of 2017 installation.

It is uncomfortable, but I resolved only by rewrighting text steps in every required action.

Hi -

I don't know if this helps at all/matches up with what others have experienced. I have been working on two files side by side for the past week. One of files continually has this problem (Can't exit text editor, have to force quite) whilst the other file is completely fine.

This leads my to believe something is corrupt in that one file rather than a general program bug.

I have the same issue and have emailed David.

MacOS Sierra (10.12.6)

Photoshop CS 2017.1.1 Release

  • I cannot recall ever having this issue before yesterday.
  • The PSD file I attached was last modified July 13, and I am 100% certain that I have not experienced this problem with this file before.
  • I do not recall whether Photoshop for Mac has been updated since July 13.
  • I opened the PSD today in order to copy some text to a new PSD. My Esc key is set to dismiss text edits. I want to say that each “freeze” I’ve experienced today has to do with me:
  1. Selecting text in PSD File A and copying.
  2. NOT hitting Esc after copying to dismiss the text “edit.”
  3. Switching to PSD File B and attempting to paste into a text box.
  4. From this point on, all that I can do is Force Quit Photoshop. Nothing else works.

Howdy Michael,

Sorry for the lag -- I got pulled onto another project and am just now catching up with the forums.  Unfortunately, I did not get your email -- I believe you Zipped the docs?  Our system doesn't allow zipped docs from outside the company.  Can you resend them unzipped?

Also, what ARE you doing for your step #2?  Using the Cancel button in the Options bar?

Thanks,

I keep experiencing this same bug, it is really annoying. Sometimes I get PS to show me the recovered files after the forced quit, sometimes I don't. Is there a way I can make sure that PS recovers the files I was working on when the bug happens? As I am typing this I have PS stuck on the backbground with a lot of unsaved progress about to be lost :(

Hi Olli,

Well, ideally, I'd like to get to the bottom of the cause of this bug and just make it go away!  What OS are you using?  What other files do you have open?  Is your application frame on or off?  What other apps do you have open?  What kind of mice or tablets are you using?

Meanwhile, if you go to Preferences > File Handling, at the top right, you'll see Automatically Save Recovery Information Every: with a default setting of 10 Minutes.  You can decrease this to 5 Minutes, if you'd like.  Then, next time the app hangs, wait five minutes and you should be okay.  But again, my goal is to solve the bug hanging the app, so any help along those lines would be most welcome.

Thanks,
David

Hey David,

I'll try to provide some info.

OSX 10.11.6 (15G31) (El Capitan)

I Usually have around three to four files open. Most of them have artboards. Most of the time I have hidden the menus with F. I do skip around a lot. In this last instance, and if I recall correctly also in others I did have the menus visible. The one constant I can think of is that when this happens the text is inside a text container.

Other apps running at the same time:

Slack
Skype
Airmail
Chrome
Finder

At the moment I am using an Asus  mouse that came with my PC, but thew bug has occurred when I've been using my standard logitech m310.

The font I was using when the bug occurred was Roboto. Other font's in the same file were
Geogrotesque, Nunito and Lato.

I have a few third party extensions:
Zeplin and Griddify

If I remember correctly this started on the previous version of PS. Or maybe the one before that. So this is quite new for me.

Some keyboard shortcut to menus worked during this freeze, for example I was able to open the preferences dialog.  I made a change in to the autosave time and after committing the changes the program crashed completely.

If there is anything else I can tell you, please let me know. Would love for this bug to disappear.

- Olli

Howdy Olli,

So something is happening on your machine that is NOT happening on mine.  I've been trying for some time to track down this bug, but with no success.  Now, that said, I do have a couple of ideas what MIGHT be going on.

Now, you're running two third party extensions that I am not.  Could you do me (and potentially yourself) a favor?  Could you try using Photoshop for a while with both Zeplin and Griddify removed and disabled?  I'm asking cuz not only do I not use either, but the problem with ESC appears to be tied to the app getting into a confused state.  If one or both of these apps at any point intercepts the app when you're editing text, it might accidentally mess up the modal state the app goes into then, making it (appear to) hang.  When menus are hidden or the app frame is off, this seems to happen more frequently, and surprise, surprise, you mention that you're in full screen mode.

Anyway, try that for several days and see if the problems disappear.  I'd really love to hear what you come up with.

Thanks,
David

Hey,

I will uninstall those plugins. It's a bit tricky though since I am in the middle of a large web project and Zeplin is used to upload the designs for dev handovers. But I will install it back when I do a hand over and then take it out again.

I can't be exactly sure but these issues might have actually started in the same time I installed the Zeplin exporter plugin. It will be interesting to try this out.

In the mean time could you please fix the bug where art boards don't render properly :)
Sometimes when I have a few art boards and I move stuff around in them they just turn to complete white and nothing renders on them.

Howdy Olli,

Thanks for trying this.  I hope the results match what I'm expecting...8-)

As for Artboards, I actually do not work on them and it's best to have one issue per thread, so please post that problem in its own conversation so that the appropriate party can follow up with you.

Hi David,

so I have been running PS with out Zeplin or Griddify for a while now and the bug has disappeared. I am quite convinced that it's the Zeplin plugin that is behind this. The problem started around the same time I installed that plugin. I've had Griddify for way longer and never had that issue before now. Of course it might be possible that griddify has a problem with new versions of PS. Soon I will install the Zeplin plugin again since I need to do design handouts. It will be interesting to see will I see the bug again.

Thanks for the feedback, Olli.  It's quite helpful, because when another user has a similar question, it gives me a place to start.

Please let us know if restoring the Zeplin plugin brings back the problem.

Hi again,

day two after re-installing the Zepling plugin and the bug has appeared. While I am writing this PS is stuck in type mode in the background and I am waiting for the autosave to do it's thing so I can force PS to quit.

I will notify the folks at Zeplin about this issue.

Best regards,

Hey,

Definitely not linked to Zeplin, has just happened to me again and I have never had either of those plugins installed. Is there a way I can it to save before I end up force quitting?

For me removing the plugin resolves the issue. I removed it since the last bug happened and so far it's hasn't happened again.

You can wait for the autosave function to do it's thing. Set the frequency to 5 min and then just wait 5 mins before forcing PS to quit. After that you should be getting the recover versions when you open it again.

I can't seem to access the Photoshop preferences to change the autosave setting because of the bug. Is there another way to change the autosave value?

The default setting is 10 minutes, so grab a coffee and sit tight for a while.

Hi Marc,

There might be multiple triggers for the problem that you're encountering.  What are you seeing, specifically?  What OS are you running?  What version of PS?  Do you have any third-party plugins?  Have you tried disabling them?  Have you tried any of the other troubleshooting steps that I've already posted?

Thanks,
David

Hi guys – I’ve figured out WHEN the issue occurs.
I am working on multiple monitors (3) and whenever I edit text on one monitor and then (while still editing the text) click with the type tool into document on another screen, the issue appears.

Is it the same in your case?

Hi Guys – is here someone from Adobe?
This issue is ABSOLUTELY THE MOST ANNOYING cos’ I keep loosing my work.
I mentioned that the bug appears while switching among documents on different screens – it’s not right. But I found that the bug is triggered by "ESC" key. Not every time but it’s definitely the trigger.

Can you solve it PLEASE?

Working with Photoshop is real pain in the ass since this bug.

:(

Adobe released a new version of PS and removed Device preview. So basically  if you want to use PS to design for anything but monitors you are stuck with this bug forever.  Really really bad move Adobe. It's truly a sad day.

Hi Idan and Alice,

What are you seeing in Photoshop 19.0 or 19.0.1 when you click ESC to confirm/quit a text edit?  This problem should have been solved for single monitors.  (I'll look into the multiple monitor scenario tomorrow).

Thanks,
David

So, what's going on with the multiple Monitor issue? It's tripping me out atm. Of course, auto save didn't work, so I can redo everything. But I'll do it in Illustrator CS4, which is still working reliably. Like PS Cs4.
Edit: I was trying to use the Glyphs Panel (the main reason for getting into PS CC). It didn't work, I could not choose alternate characters like in Illustrator, and afterwards I had to kill the PS task. On 2 monitors, Win 8.1.

This happens to me daily now and single- and dual-monitors and it is beyond frustrating.  It's a software bug and it's in the Adobe forums too.

I took the time to register because I think I've found a way to remedy this for now without force closing Photoshop.

When you can't ESC out of a text box or even use CMD + RETURN, then do the following:

Use your mouse/trackpad and click on the MOVE tool.  Then hit CMD + RETURN.  It will pop-up as a program error, thus resetting the box and escaping out.

Hope that helps.  It's not a solve for the root of the problem, but for now, it has helped me from force quitting.  Spread the word and make sure Adobe fixes this!

Hi David,

Are you using the latest version of Photoshop.  This problem should have been solved for single-monitor setups.

Thanks,
David
