Is updating to Lightroom 2 to Lightroom 5 on Mavericks OS possible without issues?

Can I update from Lightroom 2 right to Lightroom 5 without losing any libraries or presets? Also, I just got a new fully loaded iMac and am wondering if Lightroom 2 can be loaded on it (Mavericks OS) in order to do my update to Lightroom 5. I'm unable to yet find out if Lightroom 2 works in Mavericks OS so that my libraries and presets can be absorbed into Lightroom 5 upon loading. (Yes, this is a long overdue update I've needed!).

Your Lightroom 2 catalogs and presets should update fine into Lightroom 5. You will need to copy your catalogs and presets over to your new iMac. You can then install Lightroom 5 on your iMac, and open your Lightroom 2 catalog from Lightroom 5. It will go through an upgrade process automatically.

I have not tried running Lightroom 2 on Mavericks, but there were some key bugs with Mavericks compatibility that were fixed in Lightroom 5.2. I would recommend running Lightroom 5.2 on Mavericks, instead of Lightroom 2.

Great! So then it sounds like I shouldn't have to upgrade to any of the in-between versions of Lightroom in order to get from version 2 to version 5.2. That's good news. I was worried there would be a compatibility issue with my catalogs and presets from making that big of a jump between versions. Also, thank you for the heads up on running Lightroom 5.2 on Mavericks..that's good to know.

I appreciate your reply and feedback!

Hi Becky,

A quick question...the iMac I had was defective (before I had a chance to copy any files over) and I had to have it replaced. I just got the new one and installed Lightroom 5.2. But then I referred back to your note here to remind me what you mentioned about copying the catalogues over.

You had mentioned I should copy my LR 2 catalogs over, 'then' install Lightroom 5...so I'm wondering if I should uninstall LR 5..then copy everything over? Or, is it okay to have LR 5 already installed on my new iMac matter prior to my copying my catalogues over?

Thanks!

As Victoria said, should be fine to have LR 5 already installed when you copy your catalog over. You may need to point LR 5 to the LR2 catalog, which you can do via File > Open Catalog inside Lightroom.
