I have a Mac desktop computer just updated from 32 bit to 64 bit Mojave. This means that my 32 bit Photoshop Elements 11 will not work. Can anyone please tell me if there is 64 bit update I can download to make it work?

Not sure about Majove, but Photoshop Elements 11 is 64 bit install on a Mac computer.  Select which one you want installed while installing it.

Hello Steve. My system is 32 bit and a message from Apple tells me that my PSE 11 is a 32 bit and will not work on the 64 bit Mojave update. Is it possible then to get it converted to the 64 bit version?

On a Mac you normally do not select whether you want to install a 32 bits version or a 64 bit version. That is Windows stuff. On a Mac, the correct version installs automatically. You probably have to uninstall PSE 11 and then reinstall it again.

I'm a bit puzzled however. 32 bits application still run fine on MacOS Mojave, so does PSE not run at all, or do you just get a warning about future releases of MacOS that won't run it?

Hello Johan. Thanks for the reply. I have only updated to Mojave today and my 32 bit software is working fine but as you mention in your last paragraph I have had a message telling me it won't run in the future. So if I uninstall PSE11 and reinstall it, do you suppose that it will carry on working in the future?

Johan, does what you said mean that it would have a 32 bit and 64 bit option to choose from when about to re-install it?

If the installer contains both the 32 bit binaries as well as the 64 bits binaries, then the 64 bits version will be installed. You will not be asked. I don’t know what the installer contains, however.

Brian, apparently Johan is taking over for me.  He is right to reinstall it and it should install as 64 bit.  Do this after your update on your Operating System.  It needs to be operating in the 64 bit environment with different sized page-frames in your Operating System.

One potential problem is that PSE11 is quite old. It may be 64 bits itself, but there could be support binaries which are 32 bits. Those would trigger the 32 bits warning, not PSE itself. We see the same thing with Lightroom 6. Lightroom 6 itself is 64 bits, but some support files for checking the license are still 32 bits. As a result, running Lightroom 6 on Mojave triggers the 32 bits warning. And more importantly, those 32 parts may indeed stop Lightroom 6 from running on the next version of MacOS! The same may be the problem with PSE11.

Brian,

Unfortunately, photoshop elements 11 is 32 bits, but should work relatively well on Mojave.
It's just going forward with the next macOS 10.15 or whatever it is named that apple says 32 bit applications will not work, so you'll probably have to upgrade pse 11 to a 64 bit version photoshop elements if you chose to upgrade to macOS 10.15.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208436

I would wait awhile before upgrading so you can monitor this forum and the adobe photoshop elements forum for what works and does not work on the next macOS.

https://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop_elements/content

Photoshop elements 12 was the first 64 bit version of photoshop elements for mac.

You keep referring to Apple, but Adobe is not an Apple product.  Apple  has it wrong.

Sorry, but that is nonsense. MacOS obviously knows whether an app is 32 bits or 64 bits, so Apple has it right. Either PSE itself, or some of its support apps is 32 bits, otherwise you would not get the message about 32 bits support. It’s not like MacOS is getting this info from some list that could be wrong. It knows because it is the operating system that makes it possible for these apps to run at all.

Check this link again, which confirms that PSE 11 is not 64 bits (that requirement is mentioned for the first time with PSE 12): https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/system-requirements.html

I will agree that the Mac version may not be 64 bit but the Windows version sure is.  I have it I know.

No...  Elements 11 for Mac is 64 bit.  This old ad on B&H show it in the specs, go to link and arrow below.  https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/891349-REG/Adobe_65192903_Photoshop_Elements_11.html

The reason it says that is Premiere Elements 11 is 64 bit on the mac side, but photoshop elements 11 is 32 bit on the mac side.

https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-elements/system-requirements.html

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/system-requirements.html

Even with most adobe applications where the core application is 64 bit there are helper applications like the updaters that are 32 bit and that may mean that all but the newest adobe 64 bit applications won't run on the next macOS even though the application itself may be 64 bit.

We will just have to wait and see what actually runs and doesn't run when users get the final release versions of the next macOS 10.15

Well, thank you all for your helpful comments. I will do as suggested, wait for the final update, then check what does or does not work, the try re-installing PSE11.
Going of on a different tack, I have seen a free download of CS6 here:-

I used to use Photoshop 6 years ago. I know Photoshop and Elements are different but I would be happy to go back to Photoshop. Is there a catch?

Yes there's a catch and that is that is a pirated version of photoshop.

Adobe no longer sells photoshop cs6 or any photoshop version, so the chances of finding a legal unused cs6 is slim to none. Photoshop cc is now available by subscription only for about $10 a month with the Creative Cloud Photography Plan.

Ah! I see. Many thanks for that. I will avoid it and try the reinstall of PSE11 later as previously suggested. Than you all once again for your help.

My info show Elements for Mac with 64 bit.  Sure, if you have a copy of Photoshop 6 run it.  I have that and it runs fine in Windows 10 and my wife's Mac too.

Oh Steve, I am not sure whether I tried it or not. I probably assumed it would not work on a later Mac and it is probably a 32bit version anyway, so may not work later when the Mojave updates are in place.
However, knowing that the re-install of PSE11 will give the 64bit version. I'll go with that later. I don't really need everything that Photoshop gives me so PSE11 will suffice.

Photoshop elements 11 is 32 bit not 64 bit on either mac or windows.

To get a 64 bit version of photoshop elements on the mac side you would need photoshop elements 12 or newer, preferably photoshop elements 2019 for best compatibility with new macs.

Now I am confused. There seems to be conflicting opinions. So, I have been on the Adobe Chat line and I have been told that if I already have a 32bit version, I can download a 64 bit version free of charge and would you believe it, the download creates a 32bit version and the Chat line does not seem to understand when I tell them it is a 32bit version. I think I will abandon it and get Giimp.

As long as pse 11 works i wouldn't worry about it.

You'll only need to worry about it if and when you upgrade your mac to the next macOS 10.15.

For the record photoshop elements 11 is 32 bit on the mac side and no one can change that fact.  Adobe support is not the best, so no surprise they didn't know that the first photoshop elements 64 bit version the mac side was 12 and on the windows side photoshop elements 13.

Yes, on second thoughts, I will stick with the 32bit version until such times as it no longer works. Thanks for the reply.

Steve, my PSE 11 Elements has now stopped working following Apple's recent updates. I was going to reinstall it in the hope of a 64 bit version but I originally bought it from the App Store and of course, it is no longer shown. How can I reinstall it?Adobe will expect a payment if it is still listed.

Brian,
If you read this long thread carefully, it should be clear by now that PSE 11 is 32 bits only, so you can not use it with MacOS Catalina, period. The confusion in this thread was caused by a link where PSE 11 was offered in a combination with Premiere Elements 11, and Premiere Elements 11 was already 64 bits, Photoshop Elements 11 was not.

Brian,
You can go to Adobe with your name and password, follow the prompts to find your history of PSE installs and there should be a key registered the product if you paid and registered it.
If not, I suggest you go for PSE (11) or 12 which IS 64 bit.  I Know PSE10 is 64 bit.

Whether it is compatible with your OS is still in question so please check your OS compatibility apps before installing PSE12 or 11 for that matter.

John E. may be correct to say that 11 wasn't compatible with your Mac OS.  So it's a question of OS compatibility.  Check that please?   Mac has so many kind of OS.  John knows Mac well.  I'm a Windows tech.

On the mac side with macOS Catalina 10.15 only the just released photoshop elements 2020 will work.

No other version of photoshop elements will work on macOS Catalina 10.15.
