Is it possible to build the Auto W/B points sequences into the Develop Auto script? It would save a lot of key strokes.

If I open a new image in either Adobe Raw CC 2015 (6.3.1.186) or Lightroom CC (2015.7 Camera Raw 9.7) and click on “Auto” in the Develop module, the highlights of the image are invariably blown out. However, if I hold down the shift key and click on Whites and Blacks these values are set to where they should be. Is there some reason why Adobe doesn’t build the setting of the White and Black points into their Auto script? As far as I know, the process of setting White and Black points is a fairly standard practice.

What do you mean by "I hold down the shift key & click on Whites & Blacks"? I had planned on writing a similar post when I saw yours. It's not just in Camera Raw, but also in Photoshop adjustments with the Auto Tone in Image Adjustments (Shift+Ctrl+L), & the Auto button in both Levels & Curves. It has Highlight Clipping & Shadow Clipping warnings, but obviously it doesn't pay attention to those when you click the Auto Tone button; it's not following its own guidelines! 99% of the time the Auto button doesn't give the correct exposure. I usually use Levels & adjust manually. If it still doesn't look quite right I try my own presets in the Curves adjustment.

When one opens a new image in Lightroom and go to the Develop module one option under the Tune panel is to click Auto. When one clicks this it does a reasonable job of providing a starting point – with the exception that it invariably blows out the highlights. My next step is always to hold down the shift key and click on the Whites slider.  This automatically sets the white point and usually solves the problem.  I then hold down the shift key and click on the Black slider, which automatically sets the black point. I assume that setting a white and black point is one of the first things almost everyone does when starting to adjust an image.  My question is, why not just build this sequence into the script that is used for the Auto button?  It would provide a much better starting point for an image and save the user from having to go through these extra steps.
