LIGHTROOM: Independent Collections vs. Virtual Copies

The problem with Folder Library vs. Collections in conjunction with develop settings, them being reflected to the images in Folder Library and vice versa, is a BIG issue for me.

Next BIG issue is workaround with virtual copies.
If I create a collection with virtual copies from my "Master" Folder, virtual copies are not only created in collections, no, they are duplicated all over the place in my "Master" Folder. So I have to delete the VC's manually.

Working with virtual copies makes absolutely NO sense to work inside collections If I have to create different, independent, develop versions from my "Master" Photos!!

Also the function to use a target collection via shortcut "B" vanishes since I have to use the Virtual Copies command to have the photos be treated as independent files.

There MUST be a way to treat photos inside collections as independent!
If there is no way around inside actual version ofLR, would you please add that functionality ASAP.

That's the way Lightroom works, and not many people have a problem with it. It's hard to understand why you do.

I'm not flaming. But I'm not one of those "many" and I belive that there are many who think that this way how lightroom works not the most intuitive, efficient and clearest is.

Virtual copies into a collection, fine, i can live with that, BUT UNFORTUNATELY I then have to forget the target collection shortcut while browsing my library making my selection easy.

But tell me who then needs these freshly made VC's inside a collection as a same copy in their folder library? Creating confusion in Grid and Filmstrip view when working with thousands of images!!!!???

It's hard enough to distinct these confusing selection states. Selected, half selected, highlighted, half ass selected ...???!!!! The only state you clearly see is when you deselect pictures.

All I want is making a reference to my clean shots in my library and leave them untouched while working on different versions inside of collections.

At least to have my request as an setting in LR.
Right click collection - treat selections as virtual copies (but don't create duplicates in referencing library)

Easy as one two three.

Stop complaining about my complaints and just do it!!!

I never said you were flaming, but have you wondered why are you the first to make this complaint? Are you new to Lightroom?

It's pretty hard to figure out what you're ranting about, but let's take the VCs in collections as well as folders. If that worries you, just leave the stacks closed in the folder. And yes, I do continually deal with thousands of images and virtual copies of entire shoots. Do I get confused? No. I'll use stacking or other features like the Library filter or smart collections when I need to include or exclude VCs.

Maybe calm down and take a bit more time to understand how more features work?

Your problem is not stated clearly enough for me to be sure what you are on about. From what I can tell, there are 2 issues here for the price of one, but I'm not sure what they are...

I mean, I get that virtual copies (regardless of where/how they are created) are shown in folder, unless filtered out of course. But that seems like a pretty minor thing to me. As John said: just filter them out if you don't want to see them...

So I'm still wondering, what is the BIG problem here? - perhaps you can clarify.

Reminder: I realize your problem report is aimed at Adobe, and yet it's mostly other users who will reply, which can be kinda skewed... You don't have to clarify things for me, but it might help to clarify things for Adobe...

Hi,

I believe you don't understand my problem.

Creating virtual copies is just creating a mess.
Filtering or stacking is not an option because it overcomplicates the way I want to work - especially if I get additional images from PS for retouching, they get stacked alongside the virtual copies.

I often have thousands of product shots where it's hard enough to distinct one shot from another. Filmstrip or Grid view and how it behaves in LR makes it hard enought
to stay focused, but that's another topic for the LR development team. They just did not get it right on how to navigate inside LR and they have ignored it since LR 3.

How I expect LR to work; I just want to have an opt IN/OUT to make my collections independent WITHOUT being forced creating virtual copies them being reflected all over the place.

If I sort out images form my library into collections I already "virtually copied" the file, so what the heck do i have to create another unneccessary step by creating "virtual copies" command?

Is it that hard to understand?
