PHOTOSHOP CC 2014 - Incorrect open options?

I had photoshop CC 2014 running this morning with no problem. I went out, came back home and now I can't open anything. I tried different files, different formats; I tried opening from the recent files list in PS and from Bridge. Nothing would happen and no error message would appear. I tried the command in Bridge to 'place' the file into photoshop. That's when I got the message 'script alert. Error: Cannot open the file because the open options are incorrect'

I have looked under preferences but can't find anything that seems to relate to open options.

How can I correct this?

What OS version are you using?

Are you using any third party plugins or panels in Photoshop? Have you tried disabling them?

I had reset the preferences (which I had seen in another discussion), and also restarted the computer, and all seems to be well.

Very strange, since the problem did not seem occur as a result of me DOING some operation and getting an error message.

thanks for your input!
