Lightroom 5.4: Can't set rating with number keys

In LR 5.4, Library Module, grid view:

Pressing a number on the keyboard between 1 and 5 no longer sets the star rating. A popup message shows up saying that the rating was changed but no stars show up in the grid cell and the metadata does not reflect the rating. During this test I had 6 contiguous images selected using a folder as the source and a sort order of "Capture Time". Selecting different images did not change the behavior. Pressing the "6" key put a "Red" color label on 6 images, but not the 6 I had selected - it choose 6 different, contiguous, images from higher up in the grid.

After shutting down LR and reopening it, problem went away. not clear what caused it in first place, but hope it doesn't come back.

Glad to hear a restart resolved the issue and you are able to work in Lightroom again. If you notice the same issue again, please post back.

Thanks!
Becky

I have a similar problem. Only it comes back time and time again. It goes as follows: after working in LR 5.4 during about 20 minutes I can not alter the copyname of files any longer, nor can I rate or flag files. After restarting LR, it works again for another 15 minutes than the same problem occurs. Already, since I started to use LR 5.4 I had one major crash and several hickups. On top LR 5 is much slower than 4. It is very time consuming, so I am thinking to go back to LR 4 with which I never had any problem.
Additional info I have a quadcore PC12 GB RAM with Intel Xeon CPU and Windows 7 64 bits OS. My cataloque contains 60.000 images.

It appears to me like LR 5 (5.1, 5.2,& 5.3) all have memory leaks. Ever since moving from LR 4 to LR 5, after I've done a lot of Library Module work (keywords, collections, rating, etc) in quick succession LR gets very slow. In fact at times it gets spastic in that it keeps going to total black, then re-painting the screen (or part of the screen), then back to black, over and over and over. I've let it do this for over an hour one time before canceling it with Windows Task Manager. Now when it does it, I cancel quicker.

This seems to happen when 3 or 4 commands stack up. For example, I may have a hundred photos selected and I hit 3 to change their rating, Then before that is complete, I drag the group to a publish service, then click on the publish service collection to see the images there. That's just an example of the type of thing that tends to trigger the problem. The only choice is to close LR down and re-launch it. It was after one of these episodes, where LR eventually got control of itself again on its own that I had the issue with the number keys no longer setting rating values.

Even when commands don't stack up, after using LR5 for an hour or two it starts bogging down. I suspect a memory problem where it is either not clearing and releasing memory it no longer needs yet still requesting new memory blocks for new commands it is being asked to do - or it is no re-using memory allocations it already has but that are no longer needed. Either that or something is filling up, like a command stack and when new commands are added to the stack they overwrite other code.

Thanks, Dan, for your reaction. I thought I was one of only a few people having this problem, as I can not find much information about it. I must say I find it odd that it seems to happen in all versions of LR 5. When 5 first came out I started using it, but quickly returned to 4 because of this problem and the bugs at that time. Now we have 5.4, I thought the above mentioned problems would have been solved in the meantinme and gave it another try. I must say I am really disappointed in 5, and are hoping that Adobe could come up with some info how this will be tackled in the near future.

I am seeing this problem for the first time. I am running LR 5.6. The problem does go away after restarting Lightroom, but unfortunately I just spent half an hour culling a series of photographs and had to redo all of it because the ratings didn't stick. I sure hope the problem doesn't recur. It's particularly frustrating because a message appears on the screen which confirms the rating has been set, so you have to really pay attention to see that the stars are not actually appearing on the thumbnails.
