Lightroom: Improved autotone (with intelligent presets)

The new lightroom mobile is amazing in my opinion. I can now sit on any browser, tablet or phone, and edit my photos. This is the right direction :-)

But I also think there a need for greater automation in the image optimization process in Lightroom mobile (and actually also in Adobe Lightroom).

I imagine a new type of "preset" that is based on the photo image data. I think that the solution could be build on the current Autotone algoritm which makes suggestions for the lighting. It could be great if Lightroom could give 4-8 previews of different automatic light tone settings based on different algoritms ("presets"). Then the user can pick the most optimal picture.

Perhaps the algorithm can be extended to include Tone curves, Clarity, Virrance, Dehaze or even Colorchange.

And if it somehow can be combined with a preset overlay that allows the user to affect the auto-function in a given direction (Vivid, Warm, Cold, ect.), we will be left with a very strong develop-process.

Today the develop preset is good for som of the more static develop-setting (post-crop, split-toning ect.), but it is hard to get good results with develop presets when it comes to tone and color ajustments.

Your timing is pretty impeccable.

Have you tried out the Lightroom for Web Auto Tone Technology Preview?

Go to and log in with your Creative Cloud ID.
Click on the Lightroom Icon top left and select Technology Previews
From the popup dialog, put a check mark next to the "New and Improved Auto Tone" option.
Use Lightroom for Web's Edit functionality and hit the [Auto] button in the Light section.

Give it a spin, kick the tires, slam the doors and let us know what you think.

Hello Rikk

It is precisely this feature that has given me the idea to write my proposals. I think the opportunity to choose between two different tone ajustment priviews is great, and therefore the function should be further developed, allowing the user to choose from eg 6 different processed photos.

And at some point it will be optimal if the user could influence the algorithms through parameters.

Best regards

Hi Rikk,

I like the "Web Auto Tone Technology Preview" more than Lightroom desktop autotone. Is it possible to make Lightroom desktop aware of this alternative/better autotone? Because modifying lots of pictures with the web interface is way slower than using the desktop interface.
