Lightroom 4.1: Importing photos from iPhone 4 clears metadata

Importing photos from iPhone 4 clears metadata including capture dates/times for some of the photos.

It is possible that iPhone itself corrupts the metadata somehow but this also seems to be a problem in Lightroom as the Import dialogue shows the times correctly but after the import dates/times have been reset to the moment of import. Most of the photos, however, are fine, only some become corrupted.

When I look at the photos inside iPhone with Windows Explorer, it shows three different dates: date taken, created and modified. They are all correct. Then, after the Lightroom import, when I look at the copied photos on my hard drive with Windows Explorer, date taken is cleared and date created and date modified have been reset to the moment of import. Why this happens and how to prevent Lightroom from clearing the metadata?

Thank you for help!

Lightroom 4.1
iOS 5.1.1
Windows 7 64-bit

Using a service like yousendit, upload a photo file before and after import. Name them clearly. You can export the "original" or just use the Finder/Explorer to get at the catalogued copy.

Then provide the URL to the files here.

Thanks for replying.

Here are links to the files:

I just noticed that when watching the photo inside iPhone with Windows Explorer, the date taken is correct. But then, if I just manually copy the file onto my hard drive, the date taken field gets reset. And further, after importing the photo to Lightroom, the date modified field is correct until I modify metadata (In these examples I turned the copyright on in the 3rd file).

So, what happens to that date taken field when a file is copied from iPhone? And why Lightroom doesn't use the date modified field to get the date taken?

The before version does not seem to have any capture time metadata. So, I don't know what Lightroom can do about it...

As for why Lightroom behaves this way when no date/time metadata is present, that's another question: http://feedback.photoshop.com/photosh...

But when I'm importing the files from iPhone, the import dialogue shows the correct capture time. Then, during import, something happens and Lightroom doesn't know the capture time anymore. Where does the import dialogue get the capture time and how it then forgets it? I just don't understand how is that possible...
