I have a Nikon D3100 and when I try to import my photos directly from the camera I get the message that "the files could not be read". My photos are saved as jpg on my camera and I can't figure out what the glitch is and why I can't import to lightroom. How do I import directly from my camera? Please help.

Hi Sara, can you try something else to narrow it down a bit? Copy them to your hard drive using Finder/Explorer and then see if they'll import into Lightroom with it set to the Add option - we need to figure out whether it's a problem importing generally, or whether it's the direct camera connection.

A couple more questions as well:

1. What operating system and Lightroom version please?
2. Has this ever worked the way you expected?

Hi Sara,

I have all the same questions that Victoria asked. If you are not able to successfully import the photos when importing from the hard drive as Victoria suggests, then let me know and I'll contact you privately to get a sample file from you.

Thanks,
Ben

Hi,

I took Victoria's advice and was able to import from the hard drive successfully, but it's a little bit of a pain. Does it make a difference that I have a MacBook? I use Mac OS X version 10.6.8 and Lightroom version 3.4.1. The Nikon D3100 is a new camera and this is the first time I've uploaded photos from it, but I also have a Sony Cyber-Shot G that works fine and imports directly to Lightroom. I don't mind importing from the hard drive, but I would prefer to do it directly if possible. Thank you for the assistance, I'm not very computer savvy or intuitive so I appreciate the help.

That's great Sara, that's just confirmed that it's a problem with importing directly from the camera, rather than a problem importing the files themselves, which has narrowed down the problem significantly.

Using a card reader is usually the most reliable option. Importing from cameras via USB cables is often more problematic, and I don't have a Nikon D3100 here to test. Ben may have access to one though, and may be able to offer a more useful solution.
