LIGHTROOM: Import images from external drive and keep them there (Add not Copy)

I keep my photos all on external, encrypted, drive. It is no problem to create a catalog for them (library/import) in AfterShotPro. However I'm trying out Lightroom and the only option I have is a "Copy".

Why cannot I just use "Add"? I have an established, multiple year, folder structure I'd like to keep. How can I enable this?

Thanks!

You need to import from the drive listed down in the Files / Folders area not the Devices area, if there are two such instances of the external drive shown.

Unfortunately this does not work for me:

I did open "From" -> "Files/Other sources" -> selected folder.

Ok, then, I am guessing the drive is readonly to LR for some reason. Check the permissions to it for your current user, and/or maybe run LR in Administrator mode. LR needs read/write access to photos it will be importing.

I don't think this is the case: As the source and destination of the "Copy" operation are the same - Lr can copy images on the drive from one place to another -> has the privileges to write to the drive.

An easy way to instantly import *any* (importable) files you can see in Windows Explorer:

File Listener

Whether Lr considers it a device or hard-drive...

(a free plugin I wrote)
