Lightroom: Import Actions

I'd like to see import actions to be invoked upon import such that users could be sure certain post-import action items are always done. This hook could be used to make a 3rd copy, re-locate the second copy, run exiftool, analyze imported photos, assign multiple presets governed by post-import discovery, ..., rename imported photos or folders (SDK support required)... This would take some of the pressure off Adobe for import to be everything for everyone, since import plugins could be invoked...

Note: we presently have this feature for exports, but it seems not a bad idea to have it for imports too, for all the reasons above plus the ones I haven't thought of.

I would love to see hooks in the Lightroom SDK for pre-import, as well as post-import actions...

There should be "triggers" for all sorts of events

Nicely stated Rob. I still use ImageIngester to do all the heavy lifting for my imports. And I only use LR import to load the resulting images in to my catalog.

Thanks Louis. Yes, its not uncommon for people to include a pre-Lr import step that uses some other software..., and in some cases, people do post-Lr import steps too...

I would like to add the following feature request for LR:
Currently I have to use a photo import workflow through three programs:
1. Geosetter to do geotagging of pictures in a very comfotable way
2. Add a bunch of missing metadata via the wonderful exiftool program
3. full workflow then in Lighroom

Adding and modifying metadata dierctly in LR would be nice but to even come close to exiftool's power is not to be expected easily.
So I'd be more than happy if Lightroom would simply offer an automated option to run a command line (.exe file) with long options list on the to be imported files prior to importing them.
This way I could encase the use of exiftool in LR.
It should be possible to choose from 3-10 preconfigured command line options in the import dialogue.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
Lightroom: Option to execute command line program before import (e.g. exiftool).

Thanks for adding this, I strongly second the idea. Import plugins are a must...

This could allow the development of plugins to handle very specific issues people have with metadata handling, such as the ongoing issue with cropping of files from cameras with aspect ratio defined (other than the native).
