I've seen this quite a bit in the past year or so. I import photos into LR and the interface just stalls out. The CPU hits a steady 200%. I did a spindump and attached here.

Sample of process

Mojave 10.14.6 / 64GB Ram / 8700K / Radeon VII / WD Black 1TB NVME

Looks like for some error scenario (bad Images mostly), Import is unable to report the error. Can you tell us what happens when you cancel Import by clicking the cross icon (which is part of progress bar). Can you also tell us how many Images eventually get imported.

Further, does this issue happen to you always or only for the set of images for which you reported problem.

Thanks for checking in on this! I want to say the imports were 200-400 RAW files from Nikon D750. 14-bit compressed NEF format. Thing is, if I walked away and got coffee, vacuumed the house, and then came back the import would complete. I don't see this issue anymore.

I'm on V9.0 now and the import issue persists. Today, I imported about 8GB of new Nikon D750 14-bit raw files. I have a spindump and a sample of the process. Same hallmarks:

  • 200% CPU use, steady, continuous, unstopping
  • LR needs to be force-quit. It becomes non-responsive
  • LR shows 2 thumbnails yet the importer did import all images to disk
  • Restart of LR shows the import minus about 10 images. I have to "sync" the folder to bring them in.

More:

Sync dialog says "8 photos" but when the importer comes up, I only see 4.

Also, these are random photos across the set, not 4 from the end or beginning. The importer simply skipped over them on the memory card. (Sandisk 64GB 170MB/s version)

I imported the 4 and then did another sync. This time is says (4) to be imported and the importer shows ZERO photos to import.

2019-11-15 full system reboot twice. trying to import today. CPU 200% and LR Classic non-responsive. Files are importing (very slowly) to disk but not into the UI. What's going on here? This is a pretty big bug.

Can't cancel the import due to the UI locked up.
