Immediate use of a backup on the same or identical machine (OS / LR version) in case of machine failure

My concern pertains to the ability of a Lightroom user (e.g. LR5) to quickly "plug and play" - using the original main LR images (external) repository or a clone of that - in a second machine on the same platform and OS (e.g. Mac Yosemite) in case of a failure of the daily-use computer on which one runs LR5.

I attempted this not too many months ago when I switched from daily use of a Macbook Pro to a Mac Pro. (I have installed LR on both machines, of course.)

Further I have a serious concern around my ability to actually make use of the backup copies of that main repository drive as a substitute for the main drive, should that drive fail. (The backups are created and updated using SuperDuper.)
TIA
David

Or, perhaps Adobe and LR teams have a built-in application to make this not only easy, but immediate and seamless.
