Photoshop: Image is too large to "save for web" but I want to export slices

I have a very large file I've applied slices to. Now, I want to export each slice. You would normally do this with "save for web". Problem. this file is huge (it's a .PSB file) and save for web is grayed out. Now, I can't save my slices. If it were small, I'd do this by hand... but I can't, because it's big. This image is 8-Bit RGB and I tested slicing->exporting a smaller image and it works.

I confirmed it is size. It's 50,000 px high. reducing to 70% works, 75% and above does not work. This is not acceptable.

Why is the image so large to begin with?

I have the same problem and it's because I will be printing it and making the resolution smaller may affect the printing. The size of the printing is 144 inch by 96 inch.

Is there a way to solve such problems.

Yep, I'm sad about this too. Am working on a large exhibit layout, and wish I could use slices with a massive PSB file. Not only is the slice export not an option, half the slices get lost when you save and close the document. :(
