There is an option on the preferences window ... "ignore camera generated folder names when naming folders". What is assumed to happen when this option checked? Thanks.

Each camera organizes its images into some sort of folder tree-structure on a memory card. Sometimes, you can set a camera to create a new folder every 100 shots, for example. If you don’t want to have your images be imported under these folder names, you can check this setting so all your images will be imported into one folder.

Thanks a lot ... yes, I guessed so. But, this option creates no difference on the import screen.

I've tried it with a card containing camera generated folders. It is checked or unchecked ... one can always import photos "into one folder" or "by original folders".

It seems to me that it has no function on the import screen. Maybe a legacy option, I don't know.
