Photoshop: If You Lose Your Outline When Drawing with the Lasso Tool - Tip

Just made an interesting discovery that might fix the problem if your outline suddenly stops appearing as you use the Lasso Tool (and possibly other selection tools) in PS CC 2019 v20.0.4:

The Short Version:
If your outline does not appear as you are working with the Lasso Tool (and perhaps other tools), go into your Preferences>Performance and make a minor adjustment of any kind (i.e. select the "Desaturate by n% ), come back out to your image and try again. If it's now working, go back into Preferences>Performance and undo that last change, then go back out to your image and see if it's still working. If so, you're good to go.

The Long Version:
I recently upgraded to the full Adobe package and sync'd my colour settings via Bridge. That made a change in my settings I had in Photoshop (added "Desaturate 10%" in the Performance Options). For the first time since I made that change, I went into Photoshop CC 2019 v20.0.4 (working off an iMac 27 5K Mojave OS latest update) and tried to make a selection with the Lasso Tool. Most of us have had problems with this in the past, where the outline does not show as you draw out the selection. That was fixed in v20.0.2 or .3 I believe, however, in this instance my selection outline did not appear as I drew out the outline. The marching ants did appear once I closed the selection (by double clicking - I couldn't tell where I had started from looking at the screen), but nothing showed as I drew. Just on a hunch (check the last change you make to the system) I went into PS Preferences>Performance and deselected the "Desaturate by 10%" box (that had been set to ON when I made the adjustment in Bridge) and went back in to my image and tried it again. The outline was now visible as I drew. So, I again went back into my PS Preferences and reselected the "Desaturate by 10%" box, then went back to my image and the outline was still there as I drew a new selection. It seems as though making a change through Bridge (and there are possibly other ways of triggering this issue as well) to your sync'd colour settings can cause PS to hiccup and maybe bring back previous graphics issues that have been fixed with the later releases. This fix, done in PS itself might be a way of resetting PS so that all the current updates are working. That's not explained very well and I don't profess to understand what's happening here, but for now, if you get this issue again, this might be an easy fix, and it might help the engineers get a better grasp on why this is happening.

It seems that this problem is a bit worse than I thought. Without having made any further changes to the above today, I opened up PS and tried to draw a selection out. My outline has disappeared again. I deselected the box that desaturates images in PS and that seems to have worked. I left it deselected this time and rebooted both PS and Bridge, and started PS again once from Bridge and once directly. The outline appeared in each case. Adobe, I'd say you still have a problem when selecting the "Desaturate..." option in the Color Settings window. Sheesh.

Are you working on CMYK documents? If so, if you open or create a RGB file, does everything work correctly after that point?

No, sorry, I should have mentioned this. It's an RGB document that I created and am still in that mode. It seems mostly related to that "Desaturate..." option. If it's not selected, all is good. If I select it and reboot PS, the outline disappears. If I then deselect the option then close the Color Settings window, it's good, then reopen and reselect the "Desaturate" option, the outline continues to work. However, if I then close PS and reopen it, the outline is gone again. Hope that helps.

OK. I'm always getting the lasso tool online while drawing a selection here with RGB documents. Do you have Use Graphics Processor on or off? Which graphics card do you have in your iMac?

Graphics processor is on Advanced (and I need this, but before this issue was addressed, it was "solved" by turning the Acceleration off), and I have the AMD Radeon R9 M395x 4GB card. Just to be clear, you say you're getting the lasso tool, but it's the outline when drawing with the lasso tool that goes MIA (that's probably what you meant, as opposed to the tool icon on the image itself).
