I am just learning photoshop; switched from elements; BUT why can't photoshop have all the nice colors for the toolbars that elements has!!

elements was so user friendly; ie you could associate the pink eraser quickly in your mind (subconsciously searching by color for an icon rather than just by black and white pic) so tools could be found quicker.

can you add those nice colors to the icons in photoshop!?

Because colors in the toolbar and UI widgets affect your perception of color in your document. Ideally, the toolbar and UI widgets should all be gray to avoid changing how you perceive your document. Otherwise you would color correct your document for viewing when surrounded by brightly colored objects, and it would look wrong in other settings.

What's the harm in making it a user option, like color coding layers via layer options?

People also often work color swatches pallet open, the histogram, foreground/background colors, teal active layers, paths, history, scroll bars, option tab pull-downs, etc, and sometimes the dock.

Why spend our time on a design that's even conceptually a really bad idea? We've got plenty of other features to work on, and limited resources to do them.

Well, Mr.Cox’ point seems valid.

And if one really wishes for colors in the Toolbar I suspect one should be able to create a Configurator Panel with customized/colorized icons.
The OP could ask if that would indeed be feasible here:

Chris, maybe it's a bad idea, maybe not. I didn't vote for it because I probably wouldn't use it, but not every user is so HARDCORE!1!1!1!

New users, for instance, might find it very helpful and, as example, Adobe has no compunction coloring menu items for new functions and creating custom workspaces, some of which get pretty colorful. (Ie, any that include a color or swatches pallet.) Speaking of, ever see what some people do with their actions in button mode?

Anyway, if Adobe hasn't the resources for it I get it. But every so often you guys do tweak/overhaul the UI and as a general rule I find customizability a worthy goal. Let the user discover what works best for them.
