Photoshop: I'd like a menu item in the Actions panel to "Play action on all open documents"

Too frequently I open many similar documents only to realise, after a bit of fiddling, that an action would be a very useful and efficient solution to the task at hand. I then set up the action on the first open document but then either 1) have to close all documents and set up a cumbersome batch action (taking into account the one already done) or 2) click play on every document as the last one is processed (and when you have 10s or 100s of documents open, this becomes an 'uuurgh' exercise).

Therefore, I'd love to see a "Play action on all open documents" option in the Actions drop-down menu. One click and all open documents are processed according to the active action! Smart!

This would be really easy to do with a script. Perhaps someone out there could whip one up for you.

You can change the Batch source to "Opened Files"
(file > automate > batch)

Good point. I always forget Batch and go for the scripting hammer.

Interesting.

I'm one of those users who wouldn't know what to do with a script if it came with instructions!

The batch route requires like 5 or 6 clicks! Plus, possibly, some keyboard work. It's a drag.

I still think having the direct option on a dropdown is much better idea.

Thanks though.
