I open a new file and want to use paint tool. Select brush size and colour and when I go to paint - nothing is there.

Do you have a tablet? Any chance that a stylus is resting on the tablet (returning zero pressure)?

No not using a tablet. Just my finger on my mouse pad.

OK, do all tools fail, or just the paintbrush? Could it be the blend mode or other settings on the paintbrush?

paintbrush, pencil etc. Also imported image gets pixelated even though it's a 2.4 mb pic. It looks perfect in iphoto and I can zoom in and it's very sharp. But not in PS. My acrobat also stopped working with 10.7.4 can only use reader.

That's starting to sound like you have serious system troubles.

Can you show us what you mean by "pixellated"? Photoshop should be showing you the image as it is. My only guess that could cause pixelation would be a video driver glitch.
