Photoshop CS6: I have a brush icon instead of a picture in my layer mask. How can I switch it back to the picture icon?

Which product are you using?
Which version?

Are you talking about the layers palette?
Have you changed the options in the layers palette (thumbnail size, show full layer versus layer bounds, etc.)?

Click on the menu icon in the upper right of the layers palette, select "Panel Options..."
