When selecting a font in the character tab, I get a list of fonts. I seem to remember that in earlier versions of photoshop (mac) that I could use the page up/page down buttons to go through the list. Since CC version I can't do that anymore.
We've added a lot of functionality to the font face dropdown. Now you can type in part of the name of a font, such as "hel" and you'll get back a list of all fonts that contain "hel", such as Helvetica or Athelas. When the list is open, you can arrow through the list and get a live preview of that font applied to the current text layer. You can use SHIFT + arrow to move through whole font families at a time. And, to jump large distances in the font list, you can either click or drag in the scroll bars.
I'm fairly sure that this should meet your needs, but if not, ping me back and I can look into logging a feature request.
Your basic assumption is that I have a specific font in mind. A lot of times I don't. Or I'm given a piece of artwork and told to match the font style. So I need to just zoom through pages of font styles to find the one I like or that match.
And that's what was so great about the previous versions before CC in that I could open the character font preview window and just page down until I found the font that matched. The other options you mentioned I already knew. Its just the pg down /pg up was much faster and it had been removed. And it would be nice to put it back.
