Photoshop CS5: Shuts down after using File Info (not compatible with macOS 10.13 High Sierra)

Photoshop CS5: I upgraded to MacOS High Sierra, and now Photoshop shuts down after using File Info. I have never had that problem before, it worked perfect in all previous MacOS. I can edit photos, but not add any file information. What can I do?

you shouldn't update your OS unless you know that it will be compatible with your version of PS...

Hi Helena,

It is quite probable that your seven year old CS5 is not compatible with your brand new Operating System.  To be honest, that actually wouldn't be at all surprising, because seven years is a long time in the world of software applications.  Generally, software today has backwards compatibility for two or maybe three major releases/years.  Adobe is a little bit better about that.  Apple a little bit worse.

I would recommend either a) rolling back your OS to Sierra or b) trying the latest release of Photoshop Elements or Lightroom 6 to do your work, both of which are perpetual licenses.  Of course, upgrading to the latest version of Photoshop would certainly deal with the problem, but I'm going to guess you're sticking with CS5 for a reason.

It still works for you—I get that. I kept CS5 running on a partition with an installation of an older OS for a very long time so I could keep using a plug-in that wasn't going to be updated. You can do the same. Put it on a partition with an older OS.  Put it in a VM.

As for "not prehistorical," no. I have many much older versions of PS, some going back to when I ran Windows, and I suppose I could even still run them in Boot Camp if I put my old version of Windows on that partition. Or in a VM for any old OS I've got if I can't spare a partition. IOW— you can run 8 year old software if you're willing to run a 5 year old OS.

Instead, you appear to want to run a new OS, and make users like me pay for you to run an 8 year old application that you never have to upgrade. Adobe is not going to absorb the cost of adopting a policy that you get lifetime support for any product you paid for once.

When is "old" "too old to support?" It may be the same engineering work, but what goes into it EVERY NEW OS RELEASE isn't free to them, and it doesn't encourage you to put another penny towards that expense. Should they perhaps charge you so they don't charge me for it? Then, of course, they have to charge you enough to pay the accounting and customer service costs associated with that.

I strongly believe people not upgrading relatively often, as in every 2-3 releases, is why they went the subscription route, which I'm not particularly happy about, but we don't get to vote on it other than taking our business elsewhere.  I'd like to see them always keep an older version available as a perpetual license for those who don't need and/or can't afford to upgrade on the subscription model. But that older version has to be within 3 versions of the current one AND users would have to pay an upgrade fee for the perpetual license.

However, I don't want to see them support people who are perfectly happy using very, very old versions (8-9 versions behind current). I want the that money spent on fixing the problems they have with new versions or adding more powerful features and enhancements.  If they've got it to throw around, give us more engineers. I don't want to pay for your update in the price I pay for new versions, and that's exactly what would have to happen. They can't tell their stockholders they're absorbing the expense to keep all their former customers happy.

If they're receiving no remuneration for your affiliation with their product, and in fact are expected to pay you to use it through their ongoing support of it, after a certain number of years of providing you with their support, why should they care if you go to another company?  You'll just buy their product once and expect them to support that product for nigh on a decade without getting another penny from you. This isn't even your livelihood at stake. You're not an independent designer who began drowning with the 2008 crash and who constantly has to choose between software they need and the mortgage. This is just for you:  " If I use Photoshop is for my personal affection to it, not for any specific feature."

I don't get to tell manufacturers that parts for my very expensive appliances, electronics, vehicles, etc.,  should be on a longer warranty, or that I shouldn't expect to pay to have them repaired within 8 years, because, what? I could buy next time from someone else? I don't have to be loyal to GE or Samsung, but they should be loyal to me so in another 10-15 years, I just might buy something from them?

Again, it's going to cost someone, and if Adobe decides to be charitable towards those whose livelihood depends upon their product, that's their business. If they decide to provide support whatever the cost to people who don't wish to further support them, that becomes my business, since business costs do get passed on to the customers, as do hours of an employee's time spent on that, not other issues more beneficial to current customers.

Sorry, but self-interest tells me that I don't want Adobe supporting old, non-paying customers forever.

Cristen is in no way an Adobe employee, but rather an experienced graphics professional who sees the realities of these issues.  Her thoughtful and detailed response is both exceptionally on-target and a supportive voice I welcome.

We really do care about our customers' experiences and workflows, but as Cristen points out, it's just not feasible to be constantly "backfilling" every previous version whenever an OS is updated.  The testing hit alone would be huge!  Further, certain OS changes require considerable engineering effort which is largely invisible to the customers, quite frankly, because we work really hard and nail it.  Here's a great video giving you an idea of what we do and how much effort we put in: http://www.fcp.co/hardware-and-software/pro/254-the-adobe-team-talk-about-taking-photoshop-from-carb...

I'm sorry that you're unhappy with this stance, but it is a necessary reality.

p.s. -- while an employee, I, personally, was also at first skeptical with our new licensing strategy.  But over time, I can see how it's quite honestly better for our customers and indicative of the direction forward-thinking software development is headed.

Let me repeat. You are replying to an every day (non-technical) 70-year-old user. I needed a very simple explanation to my problem, how to fix... Not an 11 paragraph answer about the trials and tribulations of Adobe supporting my software...As I explained I don't even know everything that my  MAC can do let alone Photoshop. The problem fixed itself in the end when I rebooted my computer with the new OS...If I posted this question in the wrong area, I apologize, and I do appreciate your efforts to educate me on Adobe..thanks.

I am not a graphics professional, nor an expert in Adobe and it's products,  or even completely understand everything my MAC can do , but I did pay nearly $600..for this software CS5  and would expect it to be supported by both Adobe and Apple for a longer period of time than 7 years..I am, however, a digital artist who depends on this software for my art...I am just a GI Jane,  an everyday user and learning some things  photoshop has been one of my greatest joys. WHY, was their not a warning that High Sierra was having crashing difficulties, with CS5... I would never have updated, I was happy the way it was..Now I have warned my friends not to update as their computer or suffer the same fate...if you are so technically inclined, please advise me how to remove High Sierra, and go back to what it was, I am 70 years old, I am not going to be investing in new sofware at this time...So if you have any bright ideas I am open to hear them. Photoshop will crash everytime when I try to use NIK software, will not minimize and sit in the dock, it will shut down, good thing I have learned to save my work ...Any Help would be appreciated...
