I just can't believe that adobe would put out a product that is this horrible. I talked with support about how to go back to the old version, and was told sorry, no can do. There is an update coming next week though, so you should be good to go. YEAH RIGHT. TOTAL BS.

Unfortunately it made me upgrade my catalog, so that is not possible. It was suggested to me from adobe help that I could simply import all the photos back into a new (old) catalog. all 20,000.

thanks a lot adobe.

I'm not sure what you did, but the upgrade from Lightroom Classic 7.x to Lightroom Classic 8 does not upgrade your catalog.

Previous major upgrades did indeed upgrade the catalog, but Lightroom Classic 8 is not a major upgrade at all. It's basically Lightroom Classic 7.6 with a new number for some unclear reason.

"IF" the install of LR 8 did do an upgrade of your catalog then you were not using LR 7.x as doing that update, 7.x to 8.x, does NOT upgrade the catalog.
So it seems you were using an older version and more than likely LR 6 and or the CC version LR CC 2015. If that is the case you can go back to LR 6/2015 by uninstalling the currently installed version and then download the base installer and the 6.14 update from here.

https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/lightroom-downloads.html

Install the base installer then the 6.14 update. If you bought LR 6 as an upgrade you will need the serial number for a previous version along with the LR 6 serial #. If you are a subscriber then you can install older versions from the CC DTA.

In any event your original catalog is still on your drive as all versions of LR that have to upgrade a catalog COPY the catalog file they are upgrading and upgrade that copy.

Lightroom 7 and Lightroom 8 use the exact same catalog so that is not a concern.  You can backgrade from 8.1 clear back to 7.0 with no catalog issues.

That said. the behavior you are describing is not normal. Without additional information, it is difficult to diagnose the issue. My first thought is you have a bad install. Follow this procedure to verify your install.
  • Close Lightroom
  • Restart the computer
  • Use the Adobe Creative Cloud App to uninstall Lightroom Classic CC
  • Restart the computer
  • Install Lightroom Classic CC via the Creative Cloud App without launching any other programs.
  • Restart the computer
  • Launch Lightroom
  • Wait 5 minutes
If after following this procedure you are still seeing slow operation we will need data from you including:
  1. Your system's specs
  2. Installed OS Version
  3. Example operation and how many minutes/seconds it takes.
