Photoshop CC 2015.5.1: Program Error when loading selection mask in Color Range

I use a work flow using PS CS5
1. Replace Color, but only to save the color range
2. Color Range: Load that saved Replace Color selection
3: Curves to adjust the color
I've been doing this For more than a decade because the Replace Color makes it easier to select very specific color ranges, but the adjustment is not as powerful as curves.

While testing out Creative Cloud, this work flow works once on an opened file, but then when I try to repeat for the next adjustment I get this error "Could not complete the Color Range command because of a program error."

This is repeatable with or with out using custom keystrokes. Very frustrating! Also noticing saves take WAY longer with creative cloud than with CS5

I use custom keystrokes for this process and do it very automatically. Hoping not to have to give up this little workflow when I will eventually have to buy CC.

Image files are located on local network server running os x server el capitan.

The bug is repeatable every time an .axt file is saved from the Replace Color adjustment window. Once a .axt file is saved, if I attempt a Color Range adjustment I get this error message:  "Could not complete the Color Range command because of a program error."

hello? anyone there?

Hi Lisa,

Sorry for the trouble. I think I was able to go through your workflow without getting a program error.
Can you try resetting your Photoshop preferences? blogs.adobe.com/crawlspace/2012/07/photoshop-basic-troubleshooting-steps-to-fix-most-issues.html#Preferences

Are you also up to date with Photoshop CC 2015.5.1?

If you're up to date, and have tried resetting the preferences, can you record a video of your exact workflow and error you get so we can try to reproduce?

Regards
Pete

Hi Pete,

I am up to date. It is a 7 day trial of CC 2015.5.1. I restored the preferences as you suggested.
I then proceeded through the workflow and unfortunately the exact same outcome.

So I quit PS and started Quicktime Player to record the whole thing. Then went to restart PS an my trial literally just expired! I am not ready to buy CC as I am pretty happy with CS5. Is there a way to use a temporary license so I can record the issue?

Thanks!
Lisa

I uninstalled and created a new adobe id. Still said my trial was up so I can't record the screen. Oh well. I am sure one day I will have to upgrade to CC and I'll then deal with the bug if it isn't fixed by then.

FYI the problem occurs on the second cycle. It works the first time and then the second time I get the error.

So its this:

  1. Replace Color: Select an area with the eyedropper tool. Save the .axt file. and CANCEL
  2. Color Range: Load .axt file: Click OK
  3. Make color adjustment with curves.
  4. Then repeat Step 1 with a new selection and replace the .axt file and on Step 2 I get the error message "Could not complete the Color Range command because of a program error."
  5. If I close the file and reopen I can get through the first 3 steps but exactly the same thing happens if I try to repeat on an open file.
I'll be curious if you can replicate.

Anyway - thanks for trying!

I couldn't reproduce either. Do you have an error log here: Mac: Users/[user name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop CC Settings 2015.5/PSErrorLog.txt

I am very sorry to say that folder is empty. I did restore preferences to try to fix the problem and I tried to uninstall CC 2015.5 in order to try to get another trial so I could video the process. Did one of these two things delete the error log? The timing of my trial expiring is too bad.

Hello, now that Photoshop CC 2017 is out, you should be able to try it again.
I wonder, where is that .atx file located, locally, or on the network?

Could you describe what makes Replace Color more efficient than color range? Both offer similar tools and settings? Is it the color : preview, or do you use the sliders to preview the selection better than with the settings in Color Range? Would other preview modes be useful in your workflow?

I do use the lightness slider to make the preview very accurate at any magnification.  If that type of preview was available in color range I wouldn't need replace color at all. It just seems to give me much more precise selection.
