I have a question about overlaying images in photoshop keeping the entirety of both original images?

I have one oval that does not fit in the specific frame (microscope objective) I'm working with, therefore I have two images of the same oval, one with the top cut off and one with the bottom cut off. I'm hoping to overlay these images so I can determine the size of this oval. I know how to overlay, but I'm not sure how to keep the entirety of both images without losing part of the overlay. I tried extending the size of the background, but that did not work. I would like to keep the pixels of the original photos the same if possible. Thank you for any help!
