I am using lightroom cc on a MAC with 8 GB RAM. It is freezing frequenlly and crashing if I am editing or reorganizing files, keyword etc. The apple experts tell me I simply need more RAM to handlle Lightroom with the number of files I have. I have 30000 raw & jpg photos in single catalog.  Frustrating because this computer only 8 months old and is not RAM upgradeable.  I bought it based on adobe recommendation of 8 RAM.  Am I doing something wrong with organizing lightroom that is need so much RAM so soon?  Most of my files are on a external hard drive (seagate).  Is there a problem because of slow tranfer rate.  would a thundrbolt external  drive be a solution.\?

30000 on 8GB should not cause crashes and freezing. I'd generally recommend more, but unless you're running other RAM hungry programs at the same time, it shouldn't cause you notable issues.

Where's the catalog stored? Internal or external?

I've recently released a free Lightroom Performance ebook, which you might find helpful, and most of the contents can also be found on the blog too.

My catalogue is on my main hard drive.  I am putting new photos on the external drive.  THe utility monitor say Lightroom is using 1.6 gb.  totoal GB in used is 6.6, cached files approx 1.4. and I am utilizing swab files.  I am not editing or doing anything else at this time except this browser to reply to you.  DOn't see whre all this memory is being used.

There could be lots of reasons why you are experiencing delays, check you CPU & Memory loads and also check to see if you have you GPU enabled, if your graphics supports it. Another bottle neck could be your HDD's, is your Mac on SSD or Spin HDD, also what spec are your externals on.

I wouldn't have thought that 8Gb would be insufficient.

Can you give us a bit more information about your Mac in terms of how much free disk space you have available?  I'm assuming that you are using a USB connected external drive?

What free space is on that external drive?

If you can also run Activity Monitor and set it so that is shows Active Processes and see what it is doing at the time of Lightroom freezing.

Yes, please submit the crash report as Jeffrey suggested. I did a crash report search based on Carl's email address and I found no record.
